Biblical Truths to Overcome Your Worries About School

As summer winds down and our thoughts turn to routines and schedules, we may also sense a feeling of stress as the memory of busy seasons begins to weigh heavily on us again. Yet God tells us that His commands are not burdensome. We need the Lord’s truth to renew our minds as we strive to manage the season of school commitments. Relying on God’s strength and Word will strengthen us and overcome our worries as a new year approaches.

Let’s look at three scriptures that can help ease your anxiety as a new year of demands looms.

“For my yoke is easy and my burden is light,”(Matthew 11:30 ESV).

If God promises us an easy and light burden, then why do our days feel heavy? There are a few possible reasons for this. One reason could be that we are adding in more activities and requirements than God is asking of us. Pray over this scripture with your spouse and determine if there are commitments in your life that need to be reevaluated or rhythms that need to be adjusted. Consider the Pharisees who added to the law of God and therefore placed weights upon the people that God had never intended for them to carry. Consider Mary and Martha, and evaluate what the necessary activities are for your lives.

Another possibility is that you are relying on your strength rather than the Lord’s. Make sure you are prioritizing Bible reading, church, and prayer throughout your hectic days. God promises that His grace is sufficient for you and that He will supply strength to you (2 Corinthians 12:9). Lastly, you may simply need a perspective shift. Are you looking at your God given duties of managing and caring for your family as a burden? Are you focused on the negative rather than the positive? Ask the Lord to give you a fresh perspective on the routines and schedules he has placed in your life. Offer them to Him and do not grow weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9).

“In all things God works for the good of those who love Him,” (Romans 8:28).

The craziness of school, hobbies, work, extracurriculars, church, friends, and family can seem like a lot while raising children. You may wonder if it is all worth it. Just as the Lord works all circumstances in our lives for our good and His glory, He is using these seasons of life to grow and shape you and your children for the future He has prepared for you. Take some time to read or listen to missionary stories or stories of important historical figures. You will see the weaving of a story that began in childhood and culminated in incredible endeavors.

This can motivate you that these busy seasons are producing a good fruit that will one day ripen. When God says He works in all things, he means all. What seems insignificant or mundane to us is not so to God. It is a piece of the puzzle that He is putting together that will one day display a beautiful and intricate image that will reflect Him. Give each piece of the puzzle, whether bus schedules, sports, class schedules, or homework, to Him. Trust Him to make something beautiful out of what may seem a mess to you.

The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight for you . . .”(Deuteronomy 1:30).

We may think that we alone are responsible for the decisions and the days ahead, but God has promised to go before us. He always makes a way. He always leads. We are not alone in the hubbub of a new school year. God is with us, showing us where to go and smoothing the path as we do so. Talk to Him about each step because He has already been there.

If you are looking forward with trepidation, remember that God is already there. View Him in each circumstance, event, activity, and decision. He will handle the hard parts. Do not try to do it all on your own when He is waiting for you to join Him in your endeavors—reflect on other times when God has seen you through challenging, busy, or stressful seasons.

When the warm, lazy days shift into alarm clocks and school bells, resist the urge to resort to stress. Instead, strive to maintain the summer peace in your soul. Search for the green pastures and still waters in the valley. God’s truth can sustain and guide you through the routines that threaten to overwhelm. Go to the God who created order and routines in his very creation. He knows how to handle them, understands their purpose, and sees their beauty. Trust Him.
