Evie Blackwell loves her life as an Illinois State Police Detective...mostly. She's very skilled at investigations and has steadily moved up through the ranks. She would like to find Mr. Right, but she has a hard time imagining how marriage could work, considering the demands of her job.

Gabriel Thane is a lifetime resident of Carin County and now its sheriff, a job he loves. Gabe is committed to upholding the law and cares deeply for the residents he's sworn to protect. He too would like to find a lifetime companion, a marriage like his parents have.

When Evie arrives in Carin, Illinois, it's to help launch a new task force dedicated to reexamining unsolved crimes across the state. Spearheading this trial run, Evie will work with the sheriff's department on a couple of its most troubling missing-persons cases. As she reexamines old evidence to pull out a few tenuous new leads, she unearths a surprising connection...possibly to a third cold case. Evie's determined to solve the cases before she leaves Carin County, and Sheriff Thane, along with his family, will be key to those answers.

This book was amazing. It captures my attention from the very beginning and did not let up speed till the last sentences. I loved how many different storylines were happening throughout the book and how they all seemed to connect in one way or another.

The characters were strong, well developed, layered, and really wonderfully paired together.
Evie has such a drive and passion for her job, that it just added a whole other layer to her character.
I really enjoyed reading about her and discovering her life and journey throughout the whole book.
I loved absolutely love, how Dee Henderson make the mystery so complex and intriguing that it requires creativity and thought to try and figure out the mystery yourself before the book tells you.

Over all I really enjoyed this book and recommend it highly to all suspense novel readers, and if you are not a suspense novel reader, try this one out!! You won't regret it.

I received this book for free from Bethany House Publishers in exchage for my honest review.

Emotional and intenses by Sue on 6/10/2016

Evie Blackwell, an Illinois State Police detective, has the unique ability to detach herself from the emotions of a crime and objectively look at evidence, which makes her an ideal candidate to work on the new governor's cold case task force. Before the new group's existence is even announced Evie travels to Carin County to begin work on two cases, both over a decade old. A good friend and former police officer, Ann Falcon also comes to Carin to share news of Evie's work with the county sheriff, Gabriel Thane. It turns out that Ann knows all three of the Thane brothers: Gabriel, Josh, and Will and has significant news (and potential problems) for each of them.

Dee Henderson is well known for her writing which combine the thrill of crime novels with strong depictions of family loyalty and love. She's among a very select group of Christian crime/thriller authors that I consistently like their works. In TRACES OF GUILT, Ann Falcon presents an almost "all seeing" aura as she reveals deeply held secrets to each of the Thane brothers and then provides personal support for them and the two women who need her help to share their secrets. Evie's procedures sheds a light on what must be going on in dozen of cold case forces across the country; her constant questions and insights give us a different kind of thriller. There are no chase scenes or gun fights in the present story of TRACES OF GUILT; instead, we have the careful unraveling of old secrets and misconstrued happenings. Fans of Henderson's other books will want to read this one. I received a copy of this book from FAMILY CHRISTIAN BOOKS for my honest review.

Review from Rambles of a SAHM by Fitzysmom on 6/10/2016

Dee Henderson has provided us with some pretty amazing characters over the years but I think I've found a new one that I adore. Let me introduce you to her. Her name is Evie Blackwell and she works as an Illinois State Police detective. That's interesting enough, but what she is doing in her spare time is fascinating.

Evie has been invited to join a team to reopen and perhaps solve many of the cold cases across the state. Before the task force gets started Evie decides to take some vacation time and look into a couple of cases in the sleepy little town of Carin, Illinois.

Carin has two particular cold cases that have bothered the local sheriff, Gabriel Thane, for years. One hits very close to home because it involves a fellow officer. The other case seems to be farther removed with the crime happening locally but unrelated to the community.

As with all of Dee's novels the main story line is only the beginning. She has once again filled this novel with supporting characters that leave me wanting more of them. I enjoyed watching seemingly unrelated events become intertwined with others. That in fact is the essence of small town life. In such a small community eventually everyone interacts with everyone else.

The themes that are included in this work are gut wrenching. The types of things that you pray never touch your family. Unfortunately in a fallen world bad things happen. While the circumstances are horrific, this story will leave you uplifted as you watch the compassion of the Thane family encompass those that are grieving.

I look forward to many more Evie Blackwell cold cases. It is a romantic suspense novel so not everything is tragic. There are several couples that allow you to look away from the tragedy for the moment and focus in on loving relationships. If you enjoy a fast-paced story full of intrigue and compassion then I think that you will enjoy this one.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

Great for fans of law enforcement drama by Dianna at savingsinseconds.com on 6/8/2016

If you want to fill your summer reading list with books that make you think, add Traces of Guilt. Fans of crime scene mysteries and law enforcement drama will absolutely drink this up. This story revolves around two cold cases that took place in a small rural county. The characters seem so familiar that I could easily place them with faces from my hometown.

I literally did not move from my seat until I finished reading this book. My body's imprint might just be permanently molded into my couch, thanks to Traces of Guilt! Somehow, though, the story seemed to be a bit too perfect. The three Thane brothers had some kind of uncanny knack for women, because two out of the three girlfriends had serious issues to address. How likely is that? Henderson did a great job of creating the background for each story, but it was almost too much to keep straight. Still, I really loved the way that she drew most of the threads together at the end. There were still a few loose ends, but I expect to see those in future titles in the series. At least, I hope so! I received this book from Family Christian in exchange for an honest review.

Book Summary: A Riveting Cold-Case Mystery from Dee Henderson
Evie Blackwell loves her life as an Illinois State Police Detective . . . mostly. She's very skilled at investigations and has steadily moved up through the ranks. Review: Great Characters and story line. The two mysteries were great for thinking and trying to guess who did the crime and what happened. I think the premise of the story was great! The details were a little overwhelming! Almost too many characters and too much going on at times. I loved Evie, the character was well written and enjoyable. Great procedural story with a lot of details about an overwhelming amount of information. Took a bit of time to get through the book, like going through each of Evie’s files. I liked all the characters, but sometimes the characters are lacking in a way to connect.

Solving Cold Cases by Maureen on 5/23/2016

This story is supposed to be about two cold cases, and in the end there are at least five crimes exposed, if not more.
Evie Blackwell has taken vacation time from her Illinois State Police job, and is on the short list to head up the new Governor’s cold case task force. She is staying in Carin County, and looking into the disappearance of a local police officer, his wife, and son, the Florist family. Also a missing six year old, Ashley Dayton, missing from a rest stop, and family is still hoping for her return.
What makes these cases so interesting, they seem to bring other cases to the forefront at the same time? We also meet the Thane family, and by the time we are finished with the book, you will want to move in with Marie. Marie’s husband, and her three sons, all seem so wonderful and devoted Christians, and have great hearts. One son Gabriel is the Chief of Police, and he interacts with Evie, and seems to always be looking out for her welfare. Kept hoping for some romantic sparks between the two, and think if either of them let them there would be.
We follow leads and hunches all over the place, even believing the family could have obtained new identities. There is missing money, they were driving a camper, and it just disappeared. Wow, what minds looking into these cases.
If you like mystery this one really should satisfy your needs. Will she be able to solve what no one else has been able to?

What a Great Read! by Bibliomane on 5/18/2016

My humble opinion: I loved this book! *****5 Stars I'm so excited to have found a new Christian mystery author! I will be reading everything she's published.
A cold-case in the Midwest. Strong female characters. A father with three grown sons all working together to set things right in their town.
Evie Blackwell is a great character. She is driven by her work to a fault. She is smart, determined, competitive and most importantly, she loves what she does. I'm hopeful that Dee Henderson will create an entire series around her.
Evie comes to Carin, Illinois for vacation. "Vacation" meaning siphoning through years of clues to help solve two cold cases that are very close to the hearts of the people of this town. The Thane family work closely with her to unearth leads that were previously unseen.

This is a great read. I highly recommend it. The plot twists and turns coupled with great characters and an intriguing story-line kept me up later into the night reading.

Almost Like The Old Dee Henderson!! by Charity on 5/16/2016

I have been a fan of Dee Henderson since reading my first novel written by her, The Negotiator. Then she seemed to stop writing all at once, with no word for several years, til out of the blue she came out of the shadows, thrilling readers far and near! But, once I read the her latest, it lacked something from the famed O'Malley series, and after talking to others, we all had come to the same conclusion. And so it continued for the next few books. But now, in Traces of Guilt, I feel that Dee Henderson has hit her stride, able to keep us readers up til wee hours in the morning to finish the story.

Traces of Guilt brings back many characters from her recent novels, including but not limited to Ann Silvers and Paul Falcon. They actually play a major role in this book and I loved getting to see where they were at in their marriage. This book though centers around Evie Blackwell, as well as the Thane brothers Gabriel, Will and Josh. Evie has been put in charge of a task force to solve cold cases, bringing her to the area known as Carin where Gabriel is the sheriff. She is trying to solve two cases, one of which was a little girl who disappeared and then the murder of a police officer, his wife and little boy. Needless to say, this allows for a lot of tech talk, timelines and research as Evie struggles to find out what happened so many years ago.

The relationships in this novel are complicated. Evie is dating a banker type who she doesn't really feel is the right one. Will Thane is the middle brother who has seen things he will never forget in the war but he has come home and found a sweet young lady who might not be all she seems. Joshua Thane happens to be the youngest of the brothers, had a crush on a girl in school but when she left, he never got over her. So when she shows up again asking a big favor of him, it just could draw them close or else push them farther apart. And finally we have Gabriel, the eldest and the kindest guy I will ever meet in a book :) The guys I meet sure aren't like him. He is a little bit of a flirt, but takes so much responsibility on his shoulders that you want to smooth out the wrinkles in his forehead. And while nothing develops between him and Evie at this point, I can't wait to see what awaits him in the future in the skillful hands of Dee Henderson.

The mystery is intriguing, the characters are so layered and developed, you couldn't ask for more. Are there a lot of characters? Absolutely, but I felt it was akin to the O'Malley clan and all their shenanigans. Totally loved it!!

Enjoyable Read by Lindsay on 5/11/2016

It's been many years since I last read a Dee Henderson book, and I quickly remembered why I loved her! The cases were very fascinating, the characters were easy to love, and I enjoyed getting a glimpse into how these complicated cases are solved through so much creative and critical thinking.
This book fell short of 5 stars for me because the characters were just a little too perfect. They didn't seem to have any real flaws. And the cases were built up and linked in such interesting ways throughout the book only to end up being almost random. It was a little disappointing. But it was left open-ended in some respects, so I expect the following books in the series will pull everything together nicely and hopefully a little more satisfactorily.
It was worth the read and I look forward to her future books in the Evie Blackwell Cold Case Series!

Dee Henderson: Master of Suspense by Suzie on 4/29/2016

Dee Henderson is a master at taking characters from her other books and weaving them within her latest stories. The threads that tie all of her characters together are one of the many reasons she’s often at the top of my list when someone asks for a good romantic suspense writer. In her latest offering, Traces of Guilt, not only does Henderson continue the trend of incorporating her past characters, she gives voice to one of them.

While balancing not only multiple points of view (more than two which is a bit of a change for her) but also multiple storylines and crimes, Henderson’s ability to tie everything together through the Thane family is a reflection of her ability to engage readers. I felt like I was sitting in the room with Evie, Gabriel, and Ann as they worked to solve two cold cases in the town of Carin.

Most of the book is in either Evie’s or Gabriel’s point of view but we do get some insight into the other characters once in a while. It was great to get a better peek into Ann Falcon’s life (she’s shown up in books between her story in Full Disclosure and this one but in Traces, we get a better insight into her life now that she’s happily married).

I appreciate that Henderson writes strong female characters despite some horrific experiences and the men in their lives who are not only protective of them but also who encourage and uplift them.

There is just the tiniest hint of romance between the two main characters in this one. They’re building a friendship—one that hopefully blossoms into more in future books. In the end, she left me wanting more (which I’m hoping will be a wish fulfilled because this does look like the start of a new series: An Evie Blackwell Cold Case).

Pick up Sins of the Past (also available May 3) and read Henderson’s novella before Traces and you’ll recognize one more name.

Mentally spent - in a good way by Karen W {Ting's Mom} on 4/13/2016

This book pulled me in and held me tight. I found myself much more attached to these characters that I usually am, and felt mentally spent with it was over. But it was so worth the read. I love Ann and Paul and quickly fell in love with Evie as she began working on two cold cases. The people of Carin County seemed to be a great group of folks, and I hope we get to revisit them often in future books. This book was all about dramatic turns of events, relationships forming, and trusting God with the answers only He can provide. I loved every page of this book. *I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.*
