Toby Matthews looks like every other blond six-year-old. But Toby is not normal. He sees into the hearts of everyone he meets. He walks through a hospital and every patient on that wing is miraculously healed. He holds his hand up to a tornado and it immediately dissipates. He confronts an armed robber who then falls on his knees sobbing. Who is this boy and what is the source of his power? With little money and fleeing from an abusive relationship, Toby's mother leads him across the country. Toby becomes the object of a nationwide search and is eventually found and taken in by the host of a radio talk show specializing in the paranormal, who showers Toby's mother with wealth in order to gain control over the boy. But someone or something is haunting Toby, some dangerous presence threatens him, something only Toby can see. The story grows in complexity as a cult of desperate people forms around Toby. After a seminary student leaves his studies to follow Toby, it is his professor, Dr. Aaron Pratt, who eventually intercedes and compels the story to a dramatic conclusion.
