- Cliffs, mystery, romance...what better for a summer read? by Melanie Pickett on 7/14/2015
Once I picked up "The Inn at Ocean's Edge" written by Colleen Coble, I had a hard time putting it down. It's full of intrigue and suspense, mystery and conspiracy, and...love. Claire Dellamare innocently returns to Hotel Tourmaline to help her father with a business deal. What she doesn't discover until later, is that this is indeed her return to this place. She never knew she'd already been there. Her parents along with many other folks on the island of Folly Shoals, Maine, have successfully kept the secret from Claire that on her fourth birthday in 1989 she vanished from the hotel during her birthday party.
She was lost to them for one year when Claire mysteriously reappeared in the same garden she disappeared from, weeping, with a note attached stating her name, and no memory of what had happened the previous year. Over time, she had forgotten she had even gone missing or had ever been to Folly Shoals...until this return.
Claire unwittingly stumbles upon Meg and Luke Rocco, brother and sister natives and current residents of Folly Shoals, whose mother disappeared 25 years earlier, the same night Claire was taken. While walking along the cliffs overlooking the water, trying to clear her head and make sense of what she'd just learned, Claire witnesses a man push a woman off the cliff to her death. The man renders Claire unconscious and removes the body before the sheriff arrives, leaving Claire even more confused and now...frightened. The man wasn't just any man: he was the nameless, unexplained man who haunted her nightmares.
You simply must read the rest to find out what happens. The payoff is big. It's a wonderful, clean, quality, exciting book, and I count it a blessing to have been able to read and write about this book. You'll want to find out what happens to Claire. Who is the murderous man? What really happened to Meg and Luke's mother? How do she and Claire connect?
- Summer Reading Just Got Better ~ Inspirational Romantic Suspense at Its Finest by Meghan on 7/13/2015
Colleen Coble’s newest release is The Inn at Ocean’s Edge, A Sunset Cove Novel. The prologue starts the reader in the year 1989, when Claire Dellamare, then four years old, goes missing. A year later, she is found in the same location, at the same hotel, but nobody knows where she spent that missing year. In the current day, she returns to that hotel for business negotiations involving the family-owned aviation business…but memories begin to surface.
Luke Rocco’s mother disappeared about the same time that Claire disappeared, but she was never found. A chance meeting between Claire and Luke shows them their similar yet unusual histories, and together they work to discover what really happened that missing year. As they learn more, though, a mysterious man seems determined to stop Claire from learning the truth.
*cue suspenseful music*
Colleen Coble has mastered setting the scene at the beginning of each chapter through sight and sound and emotion. The story takes place in Maine at the beach, so each chapter was infused with the sights and sounds and smells of the beach. I felt like I was really there, and I love that in a book. I took a vacation at the beach last week, and I didn’t have to dump sand out of my suit.
What was particularly enjoyable was the way the two plots, both Claire and Luke’s histories, wove together at the end. I enjoy trying to figure out what-comes-next as I read any book, as I’m sure a lot of readers do, but this story had my mind spinning. How were the two deaths from twenty-five years ago related? Then I thought maybe they weren’t. But they must be! But how? Argh! And the villain? NO WAY did I figure that one out. I was guessing until the end.
So now that the book is over, what do I do while I wait for the next Sunset Cove novel? Go to Colleen Coble’s older titles!
