- Christian Shelf-Esteem's review of The Day I Met Jesus by Amanda on 3/28/2015
I’ve long been a fan of biblical fiction for it’s propensity to draw me back to The Word. It gives me a deeper understanding of the text, the culture, and attitudes of the peoples in that time period. If good biblical fiction points the reader to Christ, then the team of Mary Demuth and Frank Viola have placed Jesus under a flashing neon sign!
We are enamored with personal stories because they create an emotional bond between the receiver and the message. Author Mary Demuth capitalizes on this inherent human trait when she artfully composed the fictional diaries of five women who appear in the Gospels. By giving them a voice she adds substantial depth to the stories of scripture that we have become over familiar with. This allows her readers to see these women and Jesus more clearly.
As the fiction story ends, the reader is pointed back to scripture to read the biblical account. At this point, author Frank Viola aids the reader in “Walking It Out.” He does this by highlighting the audacity of Christ to reach out to the worst kinds of outcasts— prostitutes, adulterers, those deemed unclean, unworthy and even the simple fact that they were women! What happened at the intersection of sin and grace rocked the lives of those who encountered it, encountered Him. The Day I Met Jesus is a poignant reminder of the lengths God will go to reach the lost.
This book will inspire you to reengage with scripture and it’s Author. Through both the fictional and theological aspects, The Day I Met Jesus encourages us to accept our identity in Christ, to view our salvation with renewed gratitude, and to see the value God places on all of His children individually. With a new appreciation for the Message, allow these stories to penetrate your heart — to root out the Pharisee within — and transform you.
