- Helping others deal with their brokenness by nhundley on 11/3/2016
Using your brokenness as a gift is the overall theme of this book. Very helpful if you have experienced a crisis or are going through one now. It's just beautifully written and I would love to give this as a gift. Personally, I liked it more than One Thousand Gifts. There is so much to love about this particular book: the encouragement, positivity, and the depth of what is written. I would definitely recommend!
- Just what your heart needs. by Wendy H on 11/3/2016
Ann pours out from her heart again in this new book The Broken Way. She shares from the tender part of her soul. Every word will touch your heart. Her words are like salve for the wounds in your life. Don't hide your broken heart. Admit your brokenness and find healing. If you buy any book this year, make it this book.
- A blessing and encouragement!!! by Jennifer Leigh on 11/2/2016
“The Broken Way” is a wonderful book, both powerful and encouraging. Ann Voskamp writes with vulnerability and authenticity that is not merely a good read, rather, it is a gift, straight from her heart to ours. She interweaves her own story of brokenness with Biblical truth and gently leads us to the One true Healer of all broken hearts, our Lord Jesus who was indeed, broken for us. Reading this book touched me deeply. It felt like a personal letter from a dear friend, just to me. I’m so grateful to Ann for having the courage to write with such gut-level honesty and share this message of true hope and comfort. For anyone who has ever felt brokenhearted, this book will be a blessing! I recommend it most highly!
*Full Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book with the understanding that I would provide my honest review.
- Brokenness seen as a blessing by Julie F on 10/27/2016
All of my life I have felt broken because of all the pain inflicted on me. I considered myself to be ugly, defeated, and stupid because of my brokenness. So I lived my life as a useless broken woman. That is, until I read #TheBrokenWay.
#AnnVoskamp writes in such a descriptive way that she draws you into her story of brokenness and she opened my eyes to realize how God uses our broken story for His glory.
I no longer feel ugly when a situation breaks me, I feel blessed with anticipation to see how God makes all things new.
#AnnVoskamp changed my life with her book #AThousandGifts and now she's transformed my thought process with #TheBrokenWay.
- Life Changing! by Jennie on 10/26/2016
There are books so deep and rich that they are life changing. All of Ann's books fall into this category. A Thousand Gifts, The Greatest Gift and now, The Broken Way are filled with such profound insights that the reader can help but be bettered as they soak up the wisdom of her words. I am not the same because of Ann's books and I am so thankful she continues to share her gift with us.
- Must read for all of us! by Sarah on 10/26/2016
Ann Voskamp shares her thinking about how broken she is, and how she finds abundant life through: wonders, thoughts, concepts, and her life. She connects those to her deep relationship with God and biblical concepts/scripture.
She mixes testimonials from her life with word studies that show the Greek or Latin root word meaning of key themes like the Eucharist, koinoina, stego, anamesis, passion, emotion, interruption, ... to explain how she is building her thinking and wonders in the truth.
In other words in the giving thanks, communion living and loving, we find safety in the thatch roof of God's love, as the beloved, given and received. And we learn to live and thrive as broken, suffering gifts because God in His gift of the Lord Jesus shows us how to live abundantly focused on the cross. She explains how she recognizes how hard it is to be surrender/given to others, but that how learning to live in given love is the secret to happiness, contentment, real joy. Even though it leads her on a path that involves sacrifice, surrender, suffering the benefits are miraculous. She finds freedom from fear, anxiety, worry, her feelings as she learns to re-member and break free and be REAL in who she is broken and all.
This book shows how her spiritual growth unfolds and shares in ways anyone can relate too. It's challenging, encouraging, and a book I will read over and over again. She approaches life with therapeutic concepts applied in biblical thinking. Helping us all focus on truth over the lies that muddy our choices. Thoughts of worry, anxiety, failure, not enough, doubt, loneliness, alone, abandonment, fear, ...all brokenness can be magnified when given to God. "Feelings are meant to be fully felt and fully surrendered to God." #thebrokenway
Blessed to read a pre-release copy, all opinions are my own-I'm not required to love the book- I just do!
- Exactly what you have come to expect from Ann Voskamp by Flippin 4 This on 10/25/2016
In 2011, I started reading Ann Voskamp’s blog and read One Thousand Gifts. I’ve heard from many people that their lives have been changed by reading her words. I am one of those people. Her perspective helped me to see the beauty and the gifts in life around me. I learned how to live with an attitude of thankfulness and gratitude. The effects of her book remain with me. Many of us have wished for a “sequel” of some sort.
This book is it.
This book has the message that we have been waiting for, and my eyes have been opened again.
Broken. Fear. Suffering. These are words that Ann Voskamp is not afraid of, afraid to use, or even afraid to be. But, close on the heels of these words are other words that she uses liberally...grace, compassion, redemption.
In the beginning, she speaks of our being broken and how we can be “poured” out so that we are in fact “filled”. She reminds us our time here is limited and that we do not want to waste a moment. She speaks of the Esther Generation~here at this time, “for a purpose, not to make an impression but a difference.” She inspires with examples of how we can “be the gift” to the world around us. Comparable to the calendar she gave us with One Thousand Gifts (finding 3 things every day to be thankful for), she gives us a “Broken Way” calendar of things that we can do for others. Though she does not preach a message of repentance, she does remind us of our need for Jesus, of being His hands in this broken world, and of His unlimited grace. She urges us to be aware of our own brokenness and that we need not be afraid of broken things.
She also gives us more glimpses into her own life, her world that includes pain and even death. She is moving us and pulling everything together. We have been encouraged, reminded that we are cracked and broken, but also persuaded that in this brokenness, we can be brave. Jesus is the only one who can not only fill in all the cracks, but He covers us, smooths us, refines us, gives us more, and considers that we are enough when we are in Him. He is the One making us whole.
There are moments in this book that you will feel the lump rising in your throat as hot tears spill over; you will feel the relief and freedom flooding your soul, and you will know that you are not alone. I was not ready for this book to end and so it makes me want to “continue the conversation” by living my life in loving acceptance of brokenness.
This is a book that I will re-read. This is a book that I will share with my friends. Already, my family can see a difference, feel a difference, and we intend to make a difference. Her message rings obvious~why haven’t I seen or felt it before?
I give this book an unequivocal 5-star review. It is exactly what you would expect from Ann Voskamp. Read it. Then share it. Then do what it says.
