Seventeen-year-old Molly Fisk does not go outside. She's ruled by anxiety and only feels safe in the tiny tourist-town museum she and her mother run and call home. Yearning to live free but unable to overcome deep wounds from her past, she stays hidden away. Then the chance arrival of a woman Molly knew six years ago changes everything. Six years ago, newly single Claire Rodriguez was an empty shell. Only in the unique friendship she strikes up with a young girl--a silent girl who'll only talk to Claire--does she see the possibility of healing. But one day the girl and her mother vanish, their house abandoned. What happened that drove them away? And how can Claire now offer Molly the same chance at finding a life anew?

excellent, but sad by beckie on 1/29/13
Rating

"The Air We Breathe" by Christa Parrish is a well written, sad novel. The characters are wonderfully developed, the plot is perfect, it is an excellent book. It is also very depressing. Hannah is a 11 year old girl who while with her father at a bank it is robbed. The robbers kill her father and take Hannah with them. They then keep her for 2 weeks in a cage, doing what ever pleases them. Claire is a childless mother of three. Her children were killed in a car accident; her husband left her shortly afterwards for another women. The two characters are drawn to each other. Both are also either discovering or reconnecting with God to help them through their ordeals. Hannah goes into hiding with her mother for 6 years. She becomes terrified of all outdoors eventually never leaving her home for any reason. On a happenstance/miracle she reconnects with Claire. The two then lean back on each other to begin healing. Good book, but definitely a downer. I received this book for free from Bethany House Publishers.
