In Sisters of Mercy Flats from bestselling author Lori Copeland, the three wily and beautiful McDougal sisters can swindle a man faster than it takes to lasso a calf. But their luck is running out, and they're about to be hauled off to jail. When the wagon carrying them falls under attack, each sister is picked up by a different man.

Unfortunately for Abigail, she's grabbed by a twit of a shoe salesman, Mr. Hershall Digman. She steals his horse and rides off to the nearest town, not giving him another thought - until she discovers secret papers in his saddlebags. Could Mr. Digman be a Confederate spy?

As if to prove it, the man who comes storming after her is no shoe salesman, but a handsome captain who wants his papers back - at any cost. Abigail wants a ride back home, so together they embark on his mission, determined not to trust each other - or the God who won't seem to let them go.

Great Story by dgottreu on 5/30/13

Sisters of Mercy Flats by Lori Copeland was a great read and provided me with several good laughs and the author’s descriptions of all the action taking place provided lots of good, clean entertainment.

The three beautiful McDougal sisters, Anne-Marie, Amelia, and Abigail, can unscrupulously separate a man from his money as quick as a wink and then have no regrets about their actions. Their justification is that they give half the money to the mission where they grew up as orphans. The sisters, dressed as nuns, pull one too many swindles and find themselves in an enclosed wagon on the way to jail. A band of Indians attack the wagon and in the ruckus, the wagon plunges down a ravine. Three men on horseback come from three different directions at the sound of the attack and when they climb to the bottom of the ravine they are surprised to see three nuns in the jail wagon. At the sound of more Indian warriors approaching, Anne-Marie is grabbed by a Crow Indian, Amelia is rescued by a man named Morgan Hale and poor Abigail is left at the mercy of Mr. Hershall Digman, an awkward and seemingly incompetent shoe salesman who seems to spend most of his time trying to keep his bowler hat from blowing away. When they stop for the night, Abigail steals his horse and rides to the nearest town where she finds secret papers in Digman’s saddlebags and her first thought is that he is a Confederate spy. The man who comes riding after Abigail is definitely not a clumsy shoe salesman but a handsome Army Captain and he will do just about anything to get his papers back. Abigail just wants a ride home but she has to team up with the captain so that he can carry out his mission. They have absolutely no trust in each other and neither trusts God any longer, feeling that He has abandoned them.

Since historical western romance is one of my favorite genre of book, I thoroughly enjoyed every word of this book. There was quite a bit of suspense in the story and at many times the action going on was frightening. The romance in the story was partly one-sided and was on again off again but was a most enjoyable addition to the story. The dialogue, plot, characters, and scenes were so well developed that I was living the story right along with Abigail. I found the story to be most inspiring for even when everything seemed lost for Abigail and the captain, God’s faithfulness was ever present.

I would recommend this book to everyone who likes historical fiction that takes place in the west and has the added interest of it being set during the Civil War and also contains a good romance story as well. The book was not written as a comedy but I had some great laughs at the antics of the three sisters and the bumbling shoe salesman. I hope that the author writes two or at least one more book to let us know what happened to the other two sisters, Anne-Marie and Amelia.

I received this book free from Harvest House Publishers through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
