Hard Questions for the Bible Answer Man: Hank Hanegraaff and His Takeover of the Christian Research

Jay Howard

Hank Hanegraaff has been president of the Christian Research Institute since 1989. He is credited with authoring several books and also has been the host of The Bible Answer Man radio program. However, over the last few years a great deal of evidence has been unearthed to indicate that Hanegraaff's presidency is laced with multiple problems that need to be examined. In this ground-breaking book Jay Howard discusses many issues that show a blatant disregard for truth by the current CRI president. These and many more questions will be dealt with in the pages of Hard Questions for The Bible Answer Man: Was Hanegraaff really Walter Martin's "handpicked-successor"? Did Walter Martin's widow plan to endorse him, as the next CRI president, during the funeral? Is it really necessary for a president of a Christian nonprofit organization to make over $250,000 a year? Why did he fire so many key people after he took over in 1989? Was he equipped to take over The Bible Answer Man program in 1991? Why did CRI buy him a $66,000 Lexus sports car in 2004 while they were laying off staff? Did the post office in Rancho Santa Margarita really misdirect CRI's mail for three months at the end of 2004? Is his Personal Witness Training manual a plagiarism of Evangelism Explosion by D. James Kennedy? Why does he need to live in a one million dollar house in a gated community in North Carolina?

Not even close to worth reading - Jim - 7/18/2010
The problem with this book is that it attempts to drag a man of notoriety into a kangaroo court with unsubstantiated rumors and out right lies. The core of the issue Howard and his most note worthy source, Jill Rische, try to prove is whether or not Hanegraaff was selected by the late Rev. Martin to be his successor. As seen and heard on waltermartinjude3.com it is clear that Walter Martin did indeed intend Hank to succeed him. Their argument rises and falls with this main point and with these newly discovered tapes we finally have our answer.
Howard's other problem is that his "sources" for this book are disgruntled old employees or some family members of Walter Martin who feel that perhaps they could do a better job than Hank himself.
In either case, for a store that claims to be and markets itself to be Christian should not be selling a book whose main purpose is to tear down a man.
1 Cor. 6:1-8 clearly shows how we must handle disagreements within the church. Hank has to answer to his own church body, it's elders and pastors as well as his own family and most importantly, our Lord and savior. He does not , however have to answer to just anybody who writes a book, has a radio program, or can write an email or blog.

Worth Reading - Bryan - 6/22/2010
For many years I was a big fan of Mr. Hanegraaff's radio show, read most of his books, and even saw him speak in person twice. I especially appreciated his books, "Christianity in Crisis," and "Counterfeit Revival." Over the years, however, it seemed to me that the man was becoming more "my way or no way" in his attitude. This became abundantly clear in his dreadfully awful, self-centered book, "The Apocalypse Code." The way he slandered so many people of God simply because they don't share his view of eschatology is remarkable and detestable. (Such arrogance from a man who has no Biblical degrees.)

I must disagree with Cindee Martin's take on Jay Howard's book. She says: "He admits to never having known Walter Martin or Hank Hanegraaff." That to me adds credibility to the book, not the other way around (i.e.: Howard is not some former employee with an axe to grind, etc.).

For all of you who think that Mr. Hanegraaff walks on water - as I did for years - I think you owe it to yourself to read Howard's book. To me the real issue is not how Hanegraaff became head of CRI, it's what he became after assuming that role.

Hard Questions For The Bible Answer Man - Cindee Martin - 1/20/2010
Howard's book is written in the same style as Robert and Rosemary Brown's long forgotten book, "They Lie In Wait To Deceive" (Vol. 2) written to discredit my father, Dr. Walter Martin, the founder and first President of the Christian Research Institute (CRI). Howard's book is based upon a false and slanderous premise; It is not built on truth but on sinking sand. Hank Hanegraaff did not steal CRI; Dr. Martin confirmed his choice of Hank both in his CRI Newsletter article, to the staff and on "lost" audio tapes that my husband Rick, and I, have made public. These audios were stolen from CRI more than 10 years ago by an ex-employee who was selling Walter Martin material for profit on the Internet. The tapes underscore Dr. Martin's friendship with Hank, his high regard for and personal research of Hank's credentials. Hear Dr. Martin, in his own words, outline his leadership plans for CRI. At Dr. Martin's 1989 memorial service, John Ankerberg and Everett Jacobson (longtime CRI board member) publicly support Walter Martin's choice of Hanegraaff and Dr. Martin's publicly stated wishes for Hank to lead CRI into the future. These video clips, from his memorial service, are available on YouTube and other venues for those seeking the truth of the matter. All of the evidence proves Dr. Martin chose Hank to succeed him as President of CRI.

Walter Martin's words are an "inconvenient truth" to those who wish to spread a false conspiracy theory regarding the leadership of CRI. Sadly, Howard's book contains numerous distortions. He admits to never having known Walter Martin or Hank Hanegraaff and this book proves this to be the case. Howard mocks, speculates and draws erroneous conclusions that have no basis in fact. Dr. Martin's own words are Howard's worst critic.
