Green

Ted Dekker

Suspense fiction. Reading both as a prequel and a sequel, this is Book Zero: the Circle Reborn. As Ted Dekker masterfully reveals the “beginning” to readers, they become privy to the truth behind the saga in the Books of History Chronicles. This story of love and betrayal captures the early adventures of Thomas Hunter and the events that forever changed history. The perfect starting point for new readers and the ultimate climax for steadfast fans, Green brings full meaning to the Circle Series.

"Green"… an amazing finish and a unique beginning - Derek - 10/22/2009
Form the beginning of the book the reader is reeled into an ongoing story of passion, love, fear, mystery and intrigue.

New readers to the series have been relentlessly told that with this book (Green) you can come “Full Circle” referencing of course the entire Circle “Saga”. Boasting that any reader new to the series can just pickup Green and dive right into the series as apposed to reading “Black” the series’ original starting point.

I greatly disagree

If it had not been for me reading the original books from “The Circle Trilogy” (Black, Red, & White), I would have never appreciated the full extent of “Green”. I would have been totally lost in the epic events that were immediately occurring in the book. If readers want to fully understand the full story, in my opinion you need to start with Black.

Now… With that said…

Readers of the spinoff series “The Paradise Novels” may enjoy Green from a speculative point of view, as four major characters are mentioned numerous times throughout. We ultimately see Billy’s full story come to “full circle” after the events of “Sinner” take place.

**Spoiler Alert**

Ted Dekker does a phenomenal job at portraying the much needed back story of the original three books throughout the entire beginning of Green. The downside to this is that those like myself who have read the other books in the series sit on edge waiting for additional information to move the story forward. “WE ALREADY KNOW WHAT HAPPENED! GET ON WITH IT!” Some might say.

Dekker does an interesting spin throughout the book to capture biblical apocalyptic drama. His story telling for a majority of the book moves from almost a biblical allegory to a biblical extra-real sense. There are hints of allegory of Old Testament stories such as the story of Abraham & Isaac and the prophet Elijah Vs. the prophets of “Baal”. Also New Testament stories are pointed towards The Revelation of John the Beloved and (more specifically) the Second Coming of Christ and the Battle of Armageddon.

It definitely made for an interesting read throughout. I think in the end Dekker does an amazing job using this as “literary rope” to tie together the readers of the Paradise novels, and the circle trilogy. As a fan who has read all of them, after finishing this book I wanted to start reading the Paradise Novels again.

The End With A Beginning - Linda (Levittown, NY) - 9/18/2009
I really enjoyed this book. I read it in two evenings. This book was a wonderful ending to the Circle series, yet it ends with the beginning of Black, thus the circle continues. However, this should not be the first book that is read, as the characters and storylines are developed in detail in Black, Red, and White.
Ted Dekker is a fabulous writer, to be able to tie together the loose strings of the Circle series while incorporating some of the characters of the Paradise series and some of the storylines of the Lost Book series within Green. As usual, there are the unexpected twists and turns that make for a very interesting reading. I look forward to Ted Dekker's next book."

Epic and Amazing - Wayla - 9/14/2009
Epic and Amazing. Those are the only words that came to mind after reading this book. I had heard all of the news that Green was supposed to be “The beginning and the end” but I was almost done with the book, and I didn’t see how it could happen. But, of course, as always, Ted pulled through and delivered an ending that sent me away with my head spinning. This book, to use the words of Ted himself, was “a trip.” It brings back all of the great characters that hard core Dekker fans love, and introduces the same great characters to new readers without spoiling a whole lot of story. I was wondering how this book would live up to all of the hype, but it did, somehow. Even when I was only a few pages into the book, I was telling people that it had fulfilled all of my hopes and dreams. I will definitely be telling all of my friends to read this one.

The Beginning and the End - Caitlyn - 9/10/2009
Green…the beginning and the end. No one quite knew what to expect when Ted announced he was going to write a novel that would be a sequel AND a prequel to the Circle trilogy, but I daresay that never has one of his books been more anticipated.

Black, Red, and White introduced us to Thomas Hunter, the man who lives between two worlds. At the same time he is trying to stop a terrorist’s virus from wiping out the human population of our world, he is battling the Shataiki, evil in its rawest form, and their servants the Horde, in Other Earth. While just a few weeks pass in our world, Thomas lives many years in Other Earth and becomes a family man and a great warrior, the leader of the Circle, a people devoted to Elyon.

By the time of Green, the virus has been stopped, but Other Earth is facing its toughest battle yet. Division from within threatens to tear the Circle apart and betray the most deeply held values that makes them everything they are. This schism will test the resolve of the faithful and begin the most epic showdown of good and evil Other Earth has ever seen.

Reading Green does indeed feel like a return to the world of the Circle, but it is certainly not Black-Red-White all over again. There are several dramatic stylistic differences. First of all, in the original trilogy, the immediate stakes in our world equaled the stakes in the other world. In Green, although much important action takes place in our world, it all revolves around what’s happening in the other world, on Other Earth. I didn’t mind this a bit, but some fans miss the global drama that was played out in Black, Red, and White.

Green is also much darker than the original trilogy. It takes us to all new lows of evil that I seriously did not think were possible. Green also introduces fans to a whole new category of characters whose story was first mentioned in the Lost Books and will be further explored in the upcoming Immanuel’s Veins. If you thought the Shataiki were bad, wait till you meet the ones who have knowingly and joyfully sold their souls to them.

But while it does indeed plunge new depths, it also soars to new heights…literally. In my opinion, Green contains some of the most beautiful and entrancing scenes in the entire series. I was utterly captivated by the passionate crazy love that was displayed between Thomas and Elyon, and Thomas and his wife Chelise. Ted Dekker certainly can write the most sick and twisted evil you will find anywhere, but he also writes the most incredibly beautiful and perfect love stories with equal intensity. I don’t mean mush. I mean LOVE.

So is Green the end or the beginning? …Yes. Green is chronologically the end of the Circle, although elements of it are chronologically at the beginning. It will read as a climax to those who’ve already read the trilogy, and it will also serve as a perfect starting point to those who have yet to experience the Circle. Feedback from new fans and old has been very positive. Green is a fantastical, suspenseful adventure into the heart of darkness and the heights of glory. It is every bit worthy of the name on its cover. Start early in the day—otherwise you might not sleep.

Oh, and watch out for the ending—NO ONE saw that one coming.
