The Hole in Our GospelRichard Stearns"Preach the Gospel always. Use words if necessary." - St. Francis of Assisi It's 1998 and Richard Stearns' heart is breaking as he sits in a mud hut and listens to the story of an orphaned child in Rakai, Uganda. His journey to this place took more than a long flight from the United States to Africa. It took answering God's call on his life, a call that hurtled him out of his presidential corner office at Lenox-America's finest tableware company-to this humble corner of Uganda. This is a story of how a corporate CEO faced his own struggle to obey God whatever the cost, and his passionate call for Christians to change the world by actively living out their faith. Using his own journey as an example, Stearns explores the hole that exists in our understanding of the Gospel. Two thousand years ago, twelve people changed the world. Stearns believes it can happen again. Author proceeds are going to World Vision

I can tell you that this is part of the main reason I'm still a Christian who serves in ministry today. Being that the Dominican Republic is considered a “third world” country, several organizations work in the same way Compassion does. One of those is World Vision. This is why reading “The Hole in our Gospel” was such an “aha!” experience. I can see first hand the good that these organizations are doing in our country, and how so many children and families are receiving the Word of God through them. Something, however, is wrong right now. Our Church experience is more like going to the Supermarket or going to the Shopping Mall (“Bingo Card Gospel” as Richard Stearns call it in the book). It's something that you could probably like but you don´t really get involved with. If you have this same perception or don't understand people that have it, “The Hole in our Gospel” is a good starting point. I really enjoyed the chapter on “The Great Omission”, which is about how “The Great Commission” is now greatly absent in our churches. The book's chapters are short, so it's such an easy read. And besides, you'll be challenged all the way through. A last word: The reason there is a hole in OUR gospel is because it's OURS, and not necessarily Jesus's. -------------------------------------------------------------- 64 out of 113 visitors found this review helpful. Did you find this review helpful? This is an incredible book with a very compelling message. The scholarship and theology behind the message is very sound. It challenges every Christian to re-examine his priorities. For me, it leaves no wiggle room. 360 out of 697 visitors found this review helpful. Did you find this review helpful? How grateful is it that a CEO gave up his money while his allies saved up the money and got rich quick. This is a true story about how a young CEO traveled to a faraway poor country named Africa. He saw an orphaned little boy Richard trying to take care of his smaller siblings, Taj and Alex. Richard and Taj and Alex were cuddling and sobbing, all because the boys needed their mother to provide them food like the richest person lives. 314 out of 640 visitors found this review helpful. Did you find this review helpful? Rich brought biblical principles in ways I never thought about in this book. He also showed how he has applied those principles in his life, shared freely his struggles, failures and successes. A down-to-earth book that left me challenged. I have started challenging friends to get a copy and read, mine is too precious to give away! 300 out of 611 visitors found this review helpful. Did you find this review helpful? I laughed, I cried and I was challenged. This is a great read for both believer and non believer. Mr Stearns' transparency is engaging and he makes a compelling argument that we need to do more for "the least of these". 367 out of 731 visitors found this review helpful.
