rock/ contemporary albulm of year - cheryl (grand rapids, MI) - 5/1/2009
Incredible album by one of the most talented artists I've ever heard; not to mention that I discovered that this album received the 2008 "rock/ contemporary" christian album of the year award by the Dove awards. So many artists all start sounding alike, & all of the songs on their own album can all start sounding alike.... This is where Toby Mac stands out. He is a true artist... I would even say a musical genius, with a unique sound, & a tremendous depth of artistry in each song, with 'breaks' in all songs & every manner of modulation off the basic melody & rhythm that you can imagine. It is a very rich sound, holy lyrics, & refreshing to people who are searching for something fresh. I disagree with the review saying it is for 'teens'.... How do people say stuff like this? ... No desire to be rude, but I can only honestly say that is very limited thinking... putting people in boxes.... (which can lead Christians into all kinds of dangers in life in general). No harm meant though. We can all learn.... All I can say is that I'm mid-40s & this has remained my #1 music love for half a year so far, since we obtained it at Christmas.

Good CD for teenagers - 1/8/2008
I bought this for my daughter for Christmas. She loves it. The song he sings with Mandeesa is great. Most of his music is catered to the teenagers etc rather than adults. That's okay because they like it.

“Comin' at ya like a whirlwind” - Mike - 3/30/2007
Toby is a journeyman pop craftsman that fully understands and embraces the idea of leading off an album with his best punch. “One World,” the first track off of the freshly minted “Portable Sounds” no exception. It leads listeners down a sweet, delicious pop path with a mini-mash-up melody that’s instantly familiar and instantly your newest favorite song. It's quite possibly his best track since going it alone.

A second stand-out bides its time and shows itself much later as the funk-a-licious “Feelin So Fly.” toby pulls out all the production stops while staying sharply focused on the message of the music. TM proves you can be funky and hip without using the term "pimp" or "pimpin'."

True to his standard, Mr. Mac cranks it up a notch with the hyper-charged “Ignition.” While I found a few “Portable” tracks to be a bit musically redundant, it’s good to hear that he gives the peeps what we’ve grown to expect. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Musical Hiccups: Anyone that’s followed toby knows that he’s fond of the putting small, non-musical pearls betwixt tracks and I generally like ‘em. “Mr. Talk Box” continues that tradition and is a perfectly executed gem. But he’s crossed over the line a bit with some self-indulgent inclusions that fall victim to the dreaded “you had to be there,” rule. Some inside jokes are simply best left undocumented. “Opera trip” and “Chuck @ Artist Development” will quickly train most listeners to the use the life-saving “next track” button with Pavlovian efficiency in no time at all. Regrettably, these musical speed bumps are both appended to the end of solid tunes and can’t be avoided even with a deftly crafted playlist.

Overall, it’s a strong, enjoyable album. Let’s be honest--anyone that can make Kirk Franklin digestible clearly knows how to craft a song.
