- A Journey for Soul Restoration by Amy on 2/22/2016
I received the book Rest Assured by Vicki Courtney free as part of the Family Christian Blogger program. I was really pleased to be selected to read this book. Finding a place of rest in my daily life has been a struggle for me for some time now. I am a homeschooling mom to 5 kids, blogger and writer. I find that our family schedule fills up really fast.
I have been convicted for some time to really take time and rest. Not merely the rest that helps to restore the body, but the type of rest that restores the Soul. That is at the core of this book, Rest Assured. In our American culture, business is seen as a badge of honor. Many people have gotten so busy working to either move their career forward, help their kids to succeed or simply keeping up with all the amazing things we have available to us today. Often times we are filling up our schedule with many 'good' things, but they aren't things that can feed our souls.
Then when we find ourselves falling into discouragement and burnout we turn to escapism. We seek to hide the pain we are experiencing in many different areas of our life. We seek to fill our time with social media, television, and movies that merely distract us from our deeps seated feelings of desperation.
In her book, Rest Assured, Vicki Courtney tackles these ideas head on, and points us towards Jesus. The only person who can fill up our souls in the way we need so desperately. This book isn't a quick fix. It is not a book that gives you 7 easy steps to fill your heart. Instead Vicki Courtney invites us to examine our hearts and find out what we are really filling our time with, and put that up against what scripture calls us to be doing with our lives.
This book will challenge you in many ways, but it is a beautiful journey I hope you will take.
- Busyness Does Not Equal Importance by Jenny on 12/24/2015
I was excited to be selected to receive “Rest Assured” by Vicki Courtney as part of the Family Christian Blogger Program and happy this book came along at just the right time for me! I’ve just come off a year of my husband traveling for work, one of my children has just started competitive sports, I am a homeschooling mother of 7…and its Christmas time…whew! Let me tell you the sentence that stopped.me.in.me.tracks, “Busyness offers me a false sense of security that an overbooked calendar implies a full and meaningful life.” Wow!
After holding “it” all together for so long, I thought “it” was going to be the undoing of me. Instead of figuring out how to manage “it” all better, I realized I needed to actually examine the “it.” I needed to ask why this commitment was in our life verse this one. Why did this commitment cause me so much stress when another did not.
I love at the end of the book there is a One Week Dare, A Thirty Day Restoration Guide and a bonus, “100 Ways to Give it a Rest.” This section includes great tips like: Take a bubble bath, Abstain from technology for one solid day, Google Hummingbird Nest and look at the pictures.
The author wrote an engaging book that convicts where needs and soothes where needed…the perfect medicine for the weary woman searching for rest.
- Great for personal study or group discussions! by Emily on 12/9/2015
I was excited to be selected to receive “Rest Assured” by Vicki Courtney as part of the Family Christian Blogger Program because I knew exactly who I was going to give it to when I was finished reading it- a friend of mine who is always on the go and super busy. After reading this book, I stopped pointing at my friend and turned the finger around on myself. I have a busy-problem too!
Vicki does a phenomenal job sharing her personal journey to finding rest for her soul after spending many years trying to be the perfect wife, perfect mom, and perfect woman of God running full-speed-ahead in ministry. She helps the reader understand God’s truth in resting in Him and finding peace and joy that this world does not offer. It is a concept that is completely counter-cultural in the day we live in as we try so desperately to keep up the pace. I also truly enjoyed the reflective questions after each chapter and the challenges the author poses at the end of the book. This book is perfect for personal study or for a group to discuss. “Rest assured” is definitely a must read…you could use some time to relax and enjoy a book!
