Inspired by 1 Corinthians, in which Paul answers a series of questions posed by the people in the Corinthian church, Pastor Mark Driscoll set out to determine the most controversial questions in his congregation. Members and visitors could submit and vote for questions on the Mars Hill Church Web site. In the end, 893 questions were asked and 343,203 votes were cast. Driscoll’s answers to the top nine questions are collectively published here.
The introduction addresses a common theme found throughout the book—the misconception that we are saved by religion. Driscoll writes, "religion never saved anyone, and religious answers to complex questions are simply misconceptions." He distinguishes between biblical and strictly religious answers as he tackles nine issues: birth control, humor, predestination, grace, sexual sin, faith and works, dating, the emerging church, and the regulative principle.
Driscoll answers difficult questions with honesty and compassion, but he also firmly argues from the Bible. These chapters are written from a pastor’s heart, and Driscoll demonstrates godly concern as he corrects, challenges, encourages, and liberates. Throughout the book, biblical truth triumphs over religious legalism. Readers will find this material relevant and engaging and will continually be drawn to Christ’s sacrifice as the source of godly liberty.
