After suffering panic disorder for 38 years and having it before the medical community even understood it, this reviewer finds this book to be quackery (in its purest definition) with a few quoted unreferenced comments on panic attacks thrown in to make it sound professional. This reviewer bought the book for fun to see what the great Ray Comfort, scientist on every subject (so he thinks) had to say about this writer's condition.
Panic disorder is a physical condition that requires medical help in order to heal. While the book said many emotional words, it had very little to say about the disorder. What it did say concerning panic disorder can be found in the most common articles on the subject almost word for word. Ray comfort is no doctor, psychologist, or expert in Panic Disorder. He has no psychological education nor does he understand the complexity of brain synaptic science and how synaptic misfire causes panic disorder. As a person that has lived with panic disorder for a long time, though controlled through medical and psychological professional efforts, this panic sufferer fully understands the disease after 20 years of treatment. This book does not and approaches the subject naïvely.
Anyone practicing medicine would face a mal-practice lawsuit for giving a panic disorder patient the advice contained in this book. Reading a non-professional on how to deal with panic disorder, without getting medical help, can be dangerous. Panic disorder can lead to health problems over the long run. It raises blood pressure and that can cause aneurysms and strokes. I say that out of experience and outcome. Medicines are needed to control the disorder until behavioral thinking changes. Sometimes the medicine needs to be taken for a lifetime as the disease is physical and behavioral changes are limited. As said, without proper treatment, panic disorder can cause serious health consequences. Panic disorder is a disease that should be considered serious and there are good treatment options out there. This book is not one of them nor should this book be considered as a treatment option for panic disorder.
If one has panic disorder, leave this book alone, despite its soothing words and god-like quality. If, a person suffers from panic disorder and owns this book the sufferer would know this book does not help in the long run. This panic sufferer's advice would be to throw it in the garbage or burn it. This book is a disgrace and an insult to the community of panic disorder patients that are doing the right thing and going to the doctor for treatment.
Before I had enough nerve to go to the doctor, I read many books on panic. None of them helped. This book is outrageous and contains emotional words but does not contain any helpful information that would help one with the disease called panic disorder. Don’t waste money on this book if suffering from panic attacks. Instead spend the money on treatment from someone in the medical profession that understands the disease and can actually help your struggle with it.
