- Have You Applied The Word Lately? NKJV Apply The Word Study Bible Can Help! by Steve on 5/25/2016
underrated, and most crucial aspect of Bible study . . . actually applying the word to the lives of the reader. Where the rubber meets the road. As Howard Hendricks would have said, “What?” (the content of the Bible) needs to be followed by “So What?” Without an application, the Bible is just another book.
The NKJV Apply The Word Study Bible comes in the Kindle edition ($14.99), a hardback edition ($25.21) and 4 imitation leather editions ($37.49 - $44.99.) I received the EPub edition for review, so I am somewhat limited in what I can address in terms of functions on the Kindle. The Kindle doesn’t read EPub files, but the Adobe Digital Editions reader does, so that’s what I’m basing my review on.
The first thing I noted was the intuitiveness of the EPub file. If the program works half as good on Kindle as it does on the ADE platform, the customer will be more than pleased with the purchase. I poked around, selecting links at random, and every one of them responded quickly and correctly. There are cross-references clearly marked in a light-blue color, to either corresponding Bible passages or commentary, notes, or reference material. And while there is a learning curve to getting back to the original passage under study, it’s very slight . . . and then again, one can always consult the Navigation Panel, which can be toggled on or off from a button at the top left-hand side of the page.
There is a wealth of reference material such as tables of weights and measures with their anticipated equivalent in today’s standards, articles, maps and charts to help clarify the background of the passage and explain historical / cultural idiosyncrasies. And while they are not in-depth discussions, they help smooth the way and shed some light on obscure passages.
The concordance is again modest, not exhaustive. But the passages selected provide a “broad sweep” that covers the entire body of Scripture, and they serve as a topical Bible of sorts, as well.
The articles related to applying the Bible are aimed more toward providing timeless truths and principles that can be used immediately, wherever one may be in life. Again, they are brief, and provide more of an outline than an exhaustive compendium. But when one considers the fact that one has a Bible which is consciously striving to provide just such an application, when there are many study Bibles on the market which are not . . . well, you do the math.
One aspect of the Bible which I might consider a bit of “overkill” is the textual criticisms noted in the text. It just feels a bit odd to find references to critical Greek texts in an application study Bible. Unless you are a Greek scholar, or seminary-trained, the fact that “this particular word is not in a particular Greek manuscript” is going to confuse you at best. Worst-case scenario, the reader may feel that he’s got a high-falutin’ Greek Bible wannabe, instead of what he originally purchased the Apply The Word study Bible for in the first place – to learn how to apply the word! And if he feels that he’s bought a pig in a poke, it’s going back to the store he bought it from, pronto.
I’m still giving this Bible 5 stars, because all of its advantages far outweigh the one thing I found to quibble about. As a seminary-trained lay pastor of a small church, I’ve already informed my wife that she is to ask me, when I’ve finished my sermon preparation, if I’ve consulted this Bible in my preparation. If I have not, she is to send me back to my study to do so.
- I really like this Bible I usually don't like King James but this one was really nice I take it to my Life Group Class. I have had people ask me about it and look at it. I am always taking my new bible that I review there to see if I like the bible for my by Aussiegirl on 2/27/2016
NKJV Apply The Word Study Bible
Live In His Steps
The King James seems to be the favorite Bible for a lot of people. It’s really not my favorite Bible. I did however enjoy this Bible though because it had Key events of each book of the Bible. Application notes help provide guidance to apply scripture to your life. There are notes of events and people to make the Bible of that time come alive for the readers, a nice addition.
I love the fact that Jesus words are in red ink so many Bibles don’t put His very important words in red ink. I feel all bibles should have God’s words and Jesus words in red ink so they stand out.
At the beginning of each book of the Bible I love how it tells some important parts about the scriptures you are about to enter into and read, great idea for you to read that first and get an idea of the scriptures in that book you are going to be reading.
As we are reading Acts in my Life Group, I found in this Bible that Acts with everyday people apply their faith to everyday life Acts is one of the Bibles most timelessly relevant books.
Nice colorful maps. They are really nice to study for example: Jerusalem In The Time of Jesus. The orange color stands out and you automatically look at what it says.
I recommend this Bible highly for studying. I use it in my Love Unveil classes and my Life Group classes I may even take it and see how it works in my prayer classes!!
I received this beautiful Bible free from Booklook for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review just an honest one. The opinions I have expressed are entirely my own and no one else’s.
- POWERFUL, PRACTICAL AND PURPOSEFUL by Marsha on 2/23/2016
Never judge a Bible by its’ cover not even the wonderful graphics found on the NKJV APPLY THE WORD STUDY BIBLE. There are some basic things that need to be examined before purchasing a Study Bible.
Of course the first thing is the translation and then the size of the font. (If the print is to small you will not be able to read it.) The King James, the New King James and the New International Version are three common translations, most people have one of these three.
When purchasing a study Bible it is important to understand the focus of the commentaries and supplementary information. The NKJV APPLY THE WORD STUDY BIBLE is as it presents itself to be according to the title and the pictures and then some.
I am amazed at the amount of information, commentary, words for thought and study found in the NKJV APPLY THE WORD STUDY BIBLE.
I really do not know how to describe this Bible so that you will appreciate its’ content. It is great for: personal study; if you are a Small Group Leader or teacher it is excellent to use to when planing lessons; I believe you can learn from just reading the topical commentaries.
For those who read my reviews you realize by now that I love God’s word and I am a Bible junkie! With the NKJV APPLY THE WORD STUDY BIBLE Thomas Nelson has released my new favorite Bible and set the margin very high for any other Bible, regardless of the translation. I love it and you will too; I recommend this book. xxx Marsha L F Randolph
