- A Bible with Devotions that Focus on the Unique Lives of Military Spouses by Heather on 8/19/2014
The Military Wives New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs contains 90 devotions placed throughout the scripture passages. 60 of the devotions focus on applying the scripture passages to our lives today and have a suggested scripture reading, a key scripture, insightful questions, and a prayer. The remaining 30 devotions are stories from military spouses past and present that focus on a specific Biblical principle and have a scripture passage and prayer.
In addition to the devotions, the Bible has a selection of 10 hymns for military spouses as well as 10 study features to help you dig deeper into the Word. I would have loved to have actually had the music scores in addition to the lyrics that are featured for the hymns. The study features (noted as Basic Training in the Bible) cover topics such as depending on Christ, being a woman of character, fighting temptation, casting aside worry, reaching out to Christ, casting aside doubts, learning about love, honoring your spouse, reflecting Christ in your life, and controlling your tongue.
At first glance, this Bible does not look like a Bible. It looks like a nice hardbound book. The pages are a nice weight (not too thin), and the print is easy to read. It does have some study notes and cross references for the scripture passages at the bottom of the pages.
The devotions within the Bible are meant to be read as you read through the scriptures. It is stressed that the ultimate authority is scripture and not man’s words which I really appreciate. If you want to move from devotional to devotional rather than reading through the entire New Testament plus Psalms and Proverbs, each devotional has a notation at the bottom with the page number of the next devotional.
The devotionals themselves really focus the unique struggles of military wives including ways to keep the marriage strong, how to pray for your spouse, using our gifts, loneliness, taking care of ourselves spiritually as well as physically, and many more. The devotions offer hope and encouragement through both the good times and the bad. They talk about the challenges of being a military wife and how our faith and our church family can help us get through the tough times.
I particularly liked the Home Front Heroes stories as there is something special about reading encouragement from those who have been there, done that and not just survived but thrived. These individuals had some serious hardships, but their faith helped them make it through even the hardest of times. The stories were truly inspirational.
Overall, I’m impressed with the Military Wives New Testament with Psalms & Proverbs. It’s well thought out, and the devotions are relevant to military spouses because they were written by military spouses. I know for me personally, my faith has gotten and will continue to get me through the unique life of a military spouse. These devotionals combined with scriptures are sure to help many more on the unique adventures of the military life.
