- Wow - what I didn't know! by Lori on 3/3/2016
I began this book thinking it was going to be interesting and give a little bit of
insight into the Biblical account of Samson. I was right and I was wrong. Very wrong.
Brad Gray has done an unbelievable job of bringing the story of Samson to life and going in depth with it in a way that it never even occurred to me to look for. Taking Samson for much more than super human strength and long hair, we are brought to a deeper understanding of Samson’s story. Through his choices, we find that Samson left God long before he told Delilah about his hair! Something I had never examined.
Mr. Gray looks at each of the actions Samson takes and examines their background and purpose. For example – I never had thought about the implications of breaking the regulations for the Nazarite regulations or even the number of times he broke them. Mr. Gray goes into those actions and how they actually are all tied together and how they show a lot about the character of Samson.
My thoughts about Samson have been fairly superficial but I never realized that until reading this book. Samson is an extremely complex judge for Israel and Mr. Gray dives into his character and how it shows through each of his choices and actions.
Using his knowledge of the languages of the Bible and studying deeply each and every action Samson takes, Mr. Gray helps us delve into mistakes Samson makes. But in looking at those mistakes, he also helps us see application of the right way to act in our lives.
I have really enjoyed this book, though it is one I would not have picked up just by seeing its cover. It has been a blessing for me and has challenged me to think deeper about the story of Samson and, as an added benefit, think differently about all the other stories I read in the Bible.
