- I'm glad I read this story. It's not as predictable as it might seem . . . by Robin on 7/20/2015
Well told. I've always liked learning what makes other people tick. Although you can pretty much guess how this story is going to go, it's getting to know the characters that matters. And as they are learning and growing in their faith, what their thought processes are and the conclusions it brings for them, and the stretching and changing that comes about. I think it's a great teaching/writing style that the characters sit and talk about their faith and share lessons they've learned. Even when one character pulls away from another it doesn't always weaken them - sometimes it brings about stronger faith and a stronger relationship to God and Christ than what they had before. And there just might be a twist in there that you won't expect.
God knows who He intends for us to end up with, and those whose lives we touch along the way. Fawn of course needs to forgive herself as she has been forgiven, but she also learns that she has more things in common with others in her family and the community than she thinks. Including people who have looked down on her after she became pregnant.
I normally stick to Christian Historical Fiction, but am glad that I branched out and read this story. I highly recommend it!

- Christian Shelf-Esteem's review of Justified - Bestof2015 by Amanda on 7/9/2015
Simply by reading the synopsis of Justified, I knew I would have a connection with Fawn Baylock because of the volunteer work I do at a crisis pregnancy center in my town. I have a soft spot in my heart for unwed mothers who go against the wishes of their parents, peers, or boyfriends and choose to be single parents. With this being the first book I've read by Varina Denman, I was surprised and blown away by her uncanny gift for conveying her character's emotions and fears. In addition, the strife between Fawn and her parents, the tenuous relationship between Fawn and the baby's father, and the scrutiny of the small town gossip chain felt authentic.
The plot of this story was very well developed and bolstered by strong, emotionally compelling, and sometimes comical (thanks to Ruthie, a favorite character of mine) dialogue between characters. While JohnScott and Fawn's relationship shows promise early on, the path it takes is unpredictable and full of twists and turns.
With a peek into Fawn's past we learn that she had struggled to meet familial expectations, as well as maintain religious propriety, and class distinctions. With the news of her pregnancy, the illusion of perfection is shattered. While trying to piece together and make sense out of the remaining shards of her life, Fawn has a remarkable encounter with grace. God uses her circumstance to both humble her and to bless her with unlikely and remarkable friendships. Justified holds many lessons for Christians in how we should extend forgiveness, love, and restoration to fellow believers. Justified has made my Best of 2015 list for Contemporary Christian Fiction because it was clearly writen to bring glory to God and to affect change within the hearts and minds of it's audience.
