I really wanted to like this book. by Dana on 12/9/2014

When my son was little, I served him a new food (I can't remember what it was) and he eagerly took some on his plate and tried it. After a few minutes, he looked at me very sadly and said "I tried, but I just can't like this new stuff." That's become a saying now in our home when we try something, but we just can't like it. That's how we felt about this book. We wanted to like it and we tried very hard, continuing to pick it up and read a few pages night after night. Unfortunately, the story did not grab our attention. It may be that we did not read enough of it (60+ pages) and gave up too soon, but I feel that 60+ pages is enough time for an author to get the reader involved in the story, caring for the characters and pulling for them through their trials. My son and I agreed that parts of the story, like a hand coming up out of the dirt and grabbing someone's ankle are just too scary for younger readers and we both felt that the plot just jumped around from scene to scene without enough background explanation and without engaging us in the characters lives for us to understand what was happening or really care about them as people. If you are able to persevere to the end, you may find that you are engaged in the story and ready for the next one, but we, sadly, did not.
