When I was a child, The Berenstain Bears taught me lessons about kindness, respect, telling the truth, sharing, and stranger danger. Now as an adult, I have the joy of sharing the sweet family of bears that I grew up reading about with my own children. Creators Stan & Jan Berenstain, along with their son Mike Berenstain, have produced a line of faith based stories through their Living Lights series. While the Berenstain books have always contained lessons of morality, these new stories go beyond morality to sharing biblical principles, characteristics of God, and even quoting scripture. I am all about planting seeds of truth in my children, and these books are just one more way to expose them to God’s Word.
This week my daughter and I read Faith Gets Us Through. In this story Papa bear takes a group of Bear Scouts on their very first Cave Adventure. While all of the scouts want to earn their merit badges they are unsure of entering Spooky Cave. With Papa’s help and a little scriptural encouragement about being strong and courageous, the bears tackle their fears.
Visiting caves is something we have done with our children since they were teeny-tiny so the story had my daughter’s attention from the start. Because this was an I Can Read! Level 1 book my daughter was able to read this book to me with very little help. I enjoyed how Papa Bear shared a poem about the differences between stalactites and stalagmites; to which he later added “God made amazing things!” The nod to creation science was not lost on me. After a playful series of mis-adventures the bear scouts acknowledge that their faith and prayers got them through.
This would be a great little book to read before a cave visit or as part of a homeschool lesson on caves. If you have a child who participates in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program at a public school, this title was not listed. Chances are it’s too new of a title.
