In 1894, thirteen-year-old Dent Badeau’s search for his missing father takes him to Hawkinsville, Georgia. Here he finds a temporary home with the local race track manager and begins work as the town’s new paperboy. Dent knows that if he can earn the trust of the town’s prominent members, he may be able to find out what happened to his father.

He finds friendship with four other orphan boys, bonds founded on loyalty and a shared adventurous spirit. During those long days, the boys ponder if life is about luck, skill, or prayer. They wrestle with life’s realities and the existence of God and angels, questioning why bad things happen to innocent people - a topic that interests Dent in light of the disappearance of his father.

But evil and innocence are about to collide in this small town. Dent and his friends get involved in a mystery and find themselves facing near-death experiences, a cult group embedded on a nearby plantation, evidence of a missing gold shipment, and exposure of a major government conspiracy. Worse, it’s all somehow connected to Dent’s father, and piecing the clues together might lead to a conclusion that Dent doesn’t want to face.

Combining mystery, faith, and adventure, Hawkinsville Secrets: Evil and Innocence embraces social issues, human relations, and the realism of Southern life through the eyes of one boy.
