On the opening pages of From the Start, the latest from Melissa Tagg, you find Kate Walker trying to make sense of her life. She has been a somewhat successful scriptwriter for several years; however, deep down she wants to write something with real meaning. When Kate learns that both her father and sister were involved in a destructive tornado, you find her heading from her current home in Chicago to her hometown of Maple Valley, Iowa. Kate has no idea what she will find!
When Kate arrives at home, she is shocked to find her father's arm in a sling; however, the first shock she encounters is to find the best friend of her older brother, Logan, former NFL quarterback Colton Greene, sleeping in her bed! That is more than she can take! Before you know it, Kate has agreed to write a book about Colton Greene's life experiences. The next surprise will be watching Kate and Colton slowly begin to fall in love with each other!
Watch closely, as both Kate and Colton begin to deal with deep hurts from their past. It is awesome to see the kind of transformation that only God can bring to lives!
- Good book by Ramona on 5/17/2015
If I had to describe this book In one sentence I would have to say—this book was delightful. It was just a nice, quick read. For me personally, it started off a bit slow, however as I kept reading I became more engrossed in the story.
This book gives us the stories of two characters—Kate Walker and Colton Greene. We also learn about Kate’s family and how they impact Colton. The biggest thing I got from this story is that we do not have to have our name in headlines to be important to God. We do not have to have a gold star in Hollywood to be important to God. God has a plan for each of our lives and we were able to see that as Kate and Colton’s stories played out in this book.
If you are looking for a light, fun read, I would recommend this book to you.
I received this book for free for an honest review. Thank you for the opportunity to read this book.
- I’m in love. by BTSCelebs on 5/4/2015
Melissa Tagg’s latest novel “From The Start” was a whirlwind ride. I had mixed feelings about Colton Greene and Kate Walker’s relationship at the beginning, but towards the end Tagg had me swooning once again.
The story is about a former NFL quarterback forced to quit the job that shot him to super-stardom and find a new path in life. He heads to Maple Valley for a little down time only to be thrust into a vacation of servitude (that actually opens his heart). Along the way, he unexpectedly meets writer Kate Walker. The pair bonds over a book he asks her to write and end up falling in love. However, this love story is not a typical fantasy. Their dark pasts threaten their budding romance before it even begins.
“From The Start” made me miss football even more during this long off-season. It also reminded me of the crush I once had on a player. I enjoyed Melissa Tagg’s newest clean romance, and I’m glad she finally made one of her characters a screenwriter. All of her books deserve significant screen time in real life.
- LOVED THIS BOOK!!! by Katie on 4/22/2015
WOW!! That is one word to describe my reaction to how good this book was.
I had never read anything by Ms. Melissa Tagg before this one. One of my good friends had been telling me that she was a very good author and that I should try out one of her books but since I'm not normally a large fan of contemporary fiction I choose to wait until some other time to try one out. Then upon seeing the description of "From The Start" I knew that I just had to read it. Let's just say that Ms. Tagg is now one of my new favorite authors!! My point in telling everyone this is that you will know even if you aren't a huge fan of modern you REALLY need to read this book!! One thing I loved that was different from anything I had ever read was a former NFL football player as a hero, you didn't have to know anything about football to understand the book but since I am a football fanatic I probably loved it even more because of that. Then the heroine being a writer, well it was one of the best combo of characters that I think I've ever read. Then there was the humor, at quite a few key parts I would bust out laughing because it was so very amusing. Then it had it's serious parts too. I really appreciated the perfect balance the author
brought to this book. Every character was extremely lovable and I didn't want the book to end. I also loved how the faith
of each one in God was gently woven throughout the story. It was beautiful really. This book kept me up until all hours
of the night, I found myself continuing to read at eleven and looking up only to discover that it's now two thirty in the
morning. I just can't really say enough go about this book, it was just so great in my opinion.
I really enjoyed this book from the start (no pun intended) and have no complaints!
All in all I give this book five stars! I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who enjoys a wonderful,
entertaining story. I received this book from Bethany House Publishers for my honest review, which I have given.
I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are mine.
- Heartwarming Contemporary Romance by MusicianJuli76 on 4/7/2015
Have you ever read a story so good that you were unable to forget it weeks after you finished it? I have! From the Start is just such a book that struck a chord with me and whose engrossing story and delightful characters drew me in. It is the first book in Walker Family, Melissa Tagg's newest series.
Kate Walker & Colton Greene, the central characters of the story, are each going through a rough patch in their lives. Colton, a former NFL quarterback, has been permanently sidelined by an injury and hides away in Kate's hometown. Kate, a movie screenwriter, is also seeking some respite and heads back home after news of a natural disaster. But, from the start, God had a greater plan for their lives. One that, incidentally, throws them together and forces them to turn their lives around and trust in His will for their lives.
It is my honest opinion that this book is the author's greatest work yet and quite possibly one of the most heartwarming and evocative books that I have ever read. I found myself relating to Kate and, by the end of the book, I had grown so attached to everyone that I did not want to say goodbye. If there was an idea that the author wished you to take away from it, I believe it would go something like this: "When life sidelines you, trust in God to guide you on to the next step in the future that He has planned for you."
Although I have enjoyed every book by the author, there is something inherently different about From the Start that sets it above all the others. It was so subtle that I nearly missed it. It has a depth that I have rarely seen in others of its genre. Even the romance itself was extraordinary and I was so caught up in the emotional journey of Kate & Colton that I forgot that I was reading a book. I laughed, cried, cheered them on, and even enjoyed the football. For me, the most wonderful part was the warm, close-knit family and small hometown community. There is certainly nothing pretentious about the author's writing style. Instead, there is the sense of this unassuming, down-to-earth writer with a personal story to tell. From the Start may well have been the author's hardest story to write, but that is because it came from deep within the heart. It is books like these that are the ones that we cherish and may often become dog-eared because we have read them over and over so many times.
In conclusion, I really must say that I absolutely loved this book and I would definitely recommend it, especially to those who enjoy reading riveting, contemporary Christian romance. While it many not be in the genre that you normally read, it is still a refreshingly good read and would not be a waste of your time. Even I, an avid reader of historical fiction found myself hopelessly hooked.
I received a complimentary copy of From the Start from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The storyline is very original and I felt like I was "grabbed" since I didn't want to put it down once I started.
The life situations were so realistic and I felt like I could have been reading a true story. Everything just fell into place so well. This is a must-read book! You won't be sorry!

From The Start (Walker Family #1)
by: Melissa Tagg
This is the first book in the series and I absolutely love it. I did read Three Little Words ,a novella of the Walker family and could not wait to read From The Start, and more of the Walker family. Melissa Tagg did not disappoint me, From The Start is an amazing , good, and clean contemporary Christian romance and once I started it I did not want to put it down till the end. I fell in love with the two main characters , Kate Walker and Colton Greene, both are trying to heal old wounds and looking for new directions. Can they help each other in Kate's small hometown, Maple Valley? The town itself has gone through a lot, will it survive? Melissa Tagg has written a fabulous start to the Walker Family series and I can't wait for her next book.
I was given a copy of this book by Bethany House and the author for my honest review, which I have given.
- Fall in Love with Maple Valley and the Walker Family by Suzie on 3/7/2015
The moment Kate and Colton meet is funny and endearing. Tagg’s scene would be a perfect addition to any rom-com on the big screen, and it’s not the end of the awkward moments between these two. It does, however, mark the beginning of a friendship that brings Kate and Colton close. The two of them seem to sense the emotion in the other even during the times they strive to hide those feelings from the others. But Kate’s frustration grows as Colton will only talk to her about football—not exactly the most riveting subject for a best seller—and their one month time frame is dwindling. In the town where Colton initially felt like an outsider, he begins to view Maple Valley—and Kate—as home. But can he snatch up his dream at the risk of causing Kate to lose all of hers?
As she brings the reader into the setting of Maple Valley, Melissa Tagg succeeds in painting a vivid pictures of small town life right down to its quirky characters and everyone knowing your business. From the Walker family to the young girl who supplies the caffeine to the Scottish owner of the Chinese restaurant, each person is memorable and loveable despite their personal issues. Each person makes the reader feel more a part of Maple Valley. When disaster strikes, the town pulls together to survive and recover.
You are cheering for Kate to experience her own happily ever after instead of just writing them in her movie scripts. You want Colton to find his purpose in life and to figure out what happened in his past. You will not be disappointed with this book.
