DIY Recipes for a Healthy Baby

Today’s baby products are filled with harsh chemicals, detergents, and synthetic fragrances that can irritate your child’s skin. You can keep their skin and hair healthy and free from toxic elements by making your own.

Here are 3 DIY recipes that I’ve used for my own babies.

Homemade Baby Lotion

This lotion is easy to make and a safe alternative to store-bought products.

— ⅓ cup organic coconut oil

— ⅓ cup organic butter – shea, mango, or cocoa butter

— glass container

— hand mixer

If your baby is older than 3 months, add:

⅓ teaspoon Vitamin E Oil [optional]

5-10 drops essential oil – lavender and/or chamomile essential oils

Instructions for the thick option:

A. Use a double boiler or make your own.*

B. Bring the water to boiling then turn down to med/med-high.

C. Add the coconut oil and butter of your choice.

D. Melt ingredients.

E. Remove from heat and add oils.

Instructions for the whipped option:

A. Bring the coconut oil and butter of your choice to a soft consistency. If necessary, refrigerate until the top starts to harden.

B. Add the oils.

C. Mix everything on high speed until is soft and fluffy. The amount should just about double.

*You can store either option in a glass container!

Homemade Diaper Rash Cream

Almost every baby that’s worn a diaper has suffered diaper rash. Unfortunately, many diaper rash ointments contain ingredients we don’t want on our children but this recipe is gentle enough for a newborn!

— ½ cup shea butter

— ¼ cup coconut oil

— 1 tbsp. beeswax

— 2 tbsp. vegetable glycerin

— 10 drops lavender essential oil

— 10 drops Roman chamomile oil

Instructions

A. Use a double boiler or make your own.*

B. Bring the water to boiling then turn down to med/med-high, add everything except  glycerin and essential oils to a small glass salve jar.

C. Melt ingredients then add glycerin and mix until well blended.

D. Remove from heat, add oils, and mix.

E. Before using, clean your baby’s skin well and let it air dry.

*Make your own double boiler by setting a glass jar or measuring cup in a medium pot with 1-2 inches of water.

DIY Baby Shampoo

Adapt this recipe for your child’s skin type.

— 1 cup organic castile soap

— 1 cup distilled water

— 10 drops of essential oils – lavender or chamomile

— 1 tsp glycerin [optional for more bubbles]

Optional ingredients for different skin types:

Organic aloe vera gel – start with 1 tablespoon

Vitamin E Oil – start with 1 tablespoon

Herbal infused oil – start with 1 tablespoon

Instructions:

Mix the ingredients together and store in a glass bottle or jar.

These items are a must-have for every new mama and make a lovely baby shower gift! Simply store the products in re-sealable glass jars, print out the recipes on a card, and attach with a blue, pink or yellow ribbon. Add to a white basket with other baby essentials!
