- A Must Have for the Comic Fan! by Randi on 2/5/2015
When it comes to getting kids interested in the stories of the Bible, the original Action Bible series was ideal! The Bible is full of the same action, adventure and drama that a good graphic novel is filled with...it was the perfect fit, and really helped to make the Bible come alive for many boys (or girls) who might not have had much interest otherwise. BUT, it was still just a storybook bible and no replacement for an actual Bible. This new ESV Study Bible solves that problem. This is an ACTUAL bible, but contains many pages with that same colorful artwork we came to love in the Action Bible. Throughout, there are also several pages with black and white art within the pages as well. It is not enough to be distracting and take away from the words of the stories but still enough to keep kids interested. I also loved all the fun features that helped to bring it to life and make it relateable. If you're on the search for the perfect Bible for the comic book fan- young or old- in your life, this is ideal! We love it in our home!!
- Christian Shelf-Esteem's review of The Action Bible Study Bible ESV by Amanda on 2/5/2015
I chose the hardcover version of The Action Bible Study Bible ESV for it’s durability and graphic appeal. The book measures approximately 6"X9" making it the perfect size to fit into a student's backpack. Inside you will find 40 pages of glossy, colorful, comic book style illustrations. The majority of these are at the beginning and end of the text. Between 1 Samuel 4-Matthew 22 there are no color graphics. In that gap and throughout the study bible there are numerous black and white illustrations to complement the scriptures.
I use the English Standard Version (ESV) translation during my own study of God's Word. Being familiar and comfortable with this translation of the bible, I believe it is a good choice for young readers. The ESV utilizes a “word-for-word” translation while maintaining readability with modern grammar and syntax.
Clearly this bible targets a pre-teen and teenage audience. In The Action Bible Study Bible I hoped to see study notes on each page geared toward helping students in the middle grades understand and apply what they were reading. In place of study notes the publisher has included: “Unlock It” blocks which delve into “who did what, when and where...and why it matters.” Additionally, there are small trivia boxes under the heading “Guess It” which ask a question and provide the scripture address to find the answer. Finally, there are 53 “What About This?” boxes featuring common questions about our faith (i.e. Why do we pray?, What is heaven like?, Who wrote the bible?, and “What is sin?”).
For the first time ever I have a mixed review for a title. I enjoy learning from the ESV translation and the illustrations in this bible are top-notch! As a regular pre-teen+ bible with good feature elements (listed above) and accompanied by a few maps, an index, and a bible dictionary, I give this bible a very good - 4/5 star rating. For my particular search of a study bible with age and maturity appropriate study notes I award The Action Bible Study Bible ESV a good rating - 3/5 stars.
