Airport Ranger volunteer Stacy Broussard expected a peaceful Saturday morning ride around the perimeter of Houston’s airport. What she encounters instead is a brutal homicide and a baffling mystery. Next to the body is an injured dog, the dead man’s motorcycle, and a drone armed with a laser capable of taking down a 747.
Though FBI Special Agent Alex LeBlanc sees a clear-cut case of terrorism, his past has taught him to be suspicious of everyone, even witnesses. Even bleeding-heart veterinarians like Stacy. But when her gruesome discovery is only the first in a string of incidences that throw her life into a tailspin, Alex begins to wonder if Stacy was targeted. As a health emergency endangers Stacy’s community, and the task force pulls in leads from all directions, Alex and Stacy must work together to prevent another deadly encounter.

- Facing Explosive Suspense with Faith by Jeanie on 11/12/2016
There are some authors whose novels I simply anticipate certain things of; Diann Mills is the kind of author who I know will bring breath-taking suspense and challenging mysteries faced with varying degrees of faith. In ‘Deadly Encounter’, first of the FBI Task Force series, the author exceeded my expectations again and woven a plot with tremendous creativity and characters that the reader cares about.
Dr. Stacy Broussard, a veterinarian, volunteers a few hours periodically at the airport in Houston as an Airport Ranger, horseback riding around the perimeter of the airport to check for any illegal activities. Her partner for this day isn’t able to come, so she goes solo. Unfortunately, this is the day she encounters trouble that would change the course of her life. She finds the body of a man who had just been murdered. The leash of a friendly yellow Lab was in his hand, and the Lab had an injured paw. A shot-down military drone is found nearby. Two men from the FBI arrive, one who sternly who asks most of the questions and one who is kinder.
Stacy is in the process of getting custody of Whitt, a 12-year-old genius who frequently stays at her place as his parents are active alcoholics. Whitt has a backup plan if CPS gets involved for any reason. He helps at Stacy’s veterinary clinic, and is happy to see the Lab, who has no ID or a microchip. The events occurring over the next several days are beyond anything Stacy could anticipate, and without the assistance of FBI Special Agent Alex and his partner, she and Whitt could both lose their lives. The big picture of who shot the man at the airport, who left the dog and why, and why the drone stolen from the military was shot down there could be at least two unrelated events…as well as the danger posed by the drone as it has a laser capacity to blind a pilot of incoming or outdoing planes and cause the demise of hundreds. When Stacy and several of her neighbors become deathly ill, the stakes rose exponentially.
The author expertly develops her characters throughout; most are drawn with increasing complexity so the reader can identify with and/ or care about them. The reader also learns enough about a few as to hope they either get their act together or disappear this novel. Whitt, Stacy, and Alex are among the most likable folks, and the ones it is hardest to say goodbye to when the last page is turned.
The plot is intricately woven, a challenge for the reader to figure out who the bad guy(s)/ gal(s) might be, which appeals to this reader. There is a depth to deceptions enacted by some of the characters. I would not have anticipated some of the twists and turns that add to the novel and increase the suspense. The hazard faced by Stacy and others is not one I could have imagined and it is handled so well that it seems real. The explosive final chapters leave no loose ends, and is very satisfactory. It is refreshing to see the faith struggles of the characters; Stacy shares without being preachy, as do her parents. Seeing where Whitt and Alex are, it demonstrates how one person’s witness and sharing her doubts and how she handles them can help another. I highly recommend it to those who appreciate Christian fiction that is well-written and incredibly suspenseful with a dash of romance. This is one of Diann Mills’ finest.
From a grateful heart: I was given the book by Book Fun (The Book Club Network) and here is my honest review.
- Fantastic Read by Ramona on 9/23/2016
Wow, another incredible book by Ms. DiAnn Mills. Please keep the books coming. They are fantastic.
This is a story about Airport Ranger volunteer and veterinarian Stacy Broussard. One Saturday morning on her rounds of the airport to check security, Stacy finds a dead man. Close to the man are a drone (a stolen drone) and an injured dog. Stacy calls the police and the FBI also becomes involved with this case. FBI Special Agent Alex LeBlanc and his partner are dispatched to the scene and begin their investigation immediately. This homicide though is not clear cut in any way and Agent LeBlanc and his partner are on a mission to get answers.
In the meantime, Stacy, who is attempting to gain custody of her neglected 12 year old neighbor, Whitt, comes down with a deadly virus. Other people in her neighborhood have also been infected with this virus and some of them do not live. Can Stacy, Special Agent LeBlanc and his partner find out who the murderer is? Can they find out who intentionally infected many people with a deadly virus? Will Stacy be able to get custody of Whitt with all of this police work and illness happening so close to the court date? Can the police, the FBI and Stacy get answers before another intentional outbreak is released?
This is a great book. One that will keep you up at night because it is too difficult to put down. Ms. Mills is an excellent author. You will not be disappointed with this book.

- couldn't put it down by Mark on 7/26/2016
I have yet to be disappointed in a DiAnn Mills book. I only started reading her books in the last few years, and have enjoyed everything I have read by her. So I should have known better than to start reading this one at a time when I would have to put it down....... I read til bed time, then got ready for bed and read some more. I took it to work and read in my car up to the time I needed to in and actually finished it........ and wow. This has got to be her best one yet.
Deadly Encounter is book one in a new series by DiAnn, FBI Task Force, and it will be a tough act to follow. The book had an excellent plot that was intricate and complicated enough that I couldn't figure out what was going on, but not so much that I got lost.
I loved the main characters, especially "Whitt" the twelve year old boy growing up in the worst of circumstances. Throw a kid into a story, and this softy gets very emotionally involved in the story.
Romance takes a back seat in this novel, which was kind of cool.. not that I have a problem with some romance as long as someone is trying to kill someone. (Just kidding.... kind of) In this book, there are hints of romance throughout the book, but the mystery/suspense is the main focus of the story, and it is done very well. I was seriously reading as fast as I could to finish the book and find out how it ended...... it is that good.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good suspense and mystery. And now is the time to start this series with only one book out so far.
