Writer, traveller, teacher, textile merchant and adventurer, Alex Smith was born in Cape Town. Her experiences in mainland China, where she taught English at a university in Wuhan, inspired the short story Buffalo Panting at the Moon, which was one of the finalists in the 2007 SA Pen Literary Awards.
