- Review from Rambles of a SAHM by Fitzysmom on 4/4/2016
I really love a good fairy tale. Such a nice escape from reality. But I have to say that I never really enjoyed the story of Robin Hood. The whole stealing from the rich to give to the poor just went against my ingrained two wrongs don't make a right.
Then along came A Daring Scrifice by Jody Hedlund. It's a retelling of the Robin Hood story with several twists. I couldn't resist reading it because, well . . . Jody Hedlund! I'm so glad that I did. Jody used what I don't like about the original to bring about a tension that would ultimately lead to a crisis of conscious.
The story of Juliana Wessex is one of turning tragedy into triumph. She learns as we all must that our salvation isn't within ourselves, it comes from a higher source. The character of Lord Collin Goodrich is what we all want in a man--daring yet disciplined, loyal and devoted, brave and trustworthy. If his name seems familiar it is because you may have met him in An Uncertain Choice. (By the way, if you haven't read that one . . . treat yourself!) The tension between the two make a wonderful story of yearning for something that is seemingly in contrast to the duties they are bound to.
I would recommend this book for teen girls age thirteen and above. It has scenes of torture (it is set in medieval times) and it has two people falling in love and outward expressions of that. There's absolutely nothing scandalous but you may not want your ten-year-old avid reader consuming it. (That would have been me!) If you're on the fence about it I say read it for yourself. You'll probably love it like I did and that makes a nice treat for the momma!
In the back of the book there is a group of discussion questions. I'm thinking about using it for a mother/daughter read for my book club. Doesn't that sound like fun?!!

- A story of sacrifice and loyality by Julia on 3/30/2016
Juliana was a nobleman born into that life. When her uncle wrongs her and her father is killed she flees and lives with the poor peasants. She takes care of these people by stealing from the noblemen. Daily, she sacrifices her life for the peasants to make sure they have something to eat, knowing that if she were caught she would be harmed, or killed.
Then she is captured by Collin, a childhood acquaintance. He recognizes her for who she is brings her back to his castle and makes a bargin with her that he will give her a purse of money if she stays with him for a week. She then makes the deal if he agrees to stay with her the week after and she where she lives and how the poor live.
Neither of them thought about what would happen when her uncle came to the castle as an invited guest. If he found out who she was what would he do? So Julianna flees the castle. Collin realizes that he wants to marry her and goes after her. Does she feel the same? Did uncle capture her? Will Collin win his bet and make Julianna realize where she came from and what she deserves? Will Collin see the poor and want to join/help them? You just have to read it to find out. What a great love story about sacrifices, the true meaning of love, where it will carry you and what it can make you do.

- A Daring Sacrifice by kp on 3/17/2016
On the opening pages of A Daring Sacrifice by Jody Hedlund, you will find Juliana Wessex deeply involved with stealing from the rich in order to feed the group of people with whom she is currently living. Following a recent raid, Julianna is running deeper into the woods to avoid capture. When Julianna finally finds a safe place to stop and rest, it is on Goodrich land. This is a neighbor near her former family home. Before she knows it, Juliana find herself face to face with Lord Colin Goodrich!
Colin cannot believe he is looking into the eyes of Julianna Wessex! She is the young girl that everyone believed to have died years ago at the same time her father was killed. All Colin can think about is how he will be able to remove her from her current circumstances. Before he knows it, Julianna is injured when she falls from a tree in an attempt to escape. When Colin sees the extent of her injuries, he offers Julianna a week stay in his home in order to help her recover. Julianna agrees on the condition that Colin will commit to a week stay in her world as well!
You have no idea what will happen after both Colin and Julianna have time to see and experience a different world from their own. This is an exciting tale to say the least!

- Enchanting! by Lucy on 2/24/2016
A Daring Sacrifice is a quick, light, easy read with characters that will capture your heart and a love that will fill you with warm fuzzies. It is a promising sequel to An Uncertain Choice, and in my opinion, better. I did enjoy An Uncertain Choice very much, but in this book we see more of the country. We see the forest, the needy, and we have the full character arc of our lead male, Collin. Though the characters did change by the end of An Uncertain Choice, it wasn't enough. In this book, the character change was perfect. I didn't feel jilted nor did I feel overwhelmed. Jody Hedlund has clearly improved her writing and strategies, perfecting them to fit into the YA genre. The plot was tight, the characters inviting.
I loved seeing more of England in this book. It carried the Robin Hood vibe well, not overdoing it as I've seen before. Juliana cared for her people, would risk anything for them, but she wasn't pompous or ridiculous about it. She was simple to understand, an easy character to care for.
The writing is this book in top-notch. I imagined every scene, every moment, like a movie in my mind. I felt deeply for every character.
MY FEW COMPLAINTS BELOW
I did feel like Juliana's archery talents were a bit cliché
The romance was very fast. Usually I'm not a fan of that.
The peasants all lived underground? It was… interesting.
Speaking of the above romance moving fast… The speed of it was uncommon for the time period and they were a little too affectionate.
FOR THE PARENTS -
Cussing – None
Intimacy – Mild kissing, some euphemisms
Violence – Honestly, this is YA. So the violence was fine for YA. But I wouldn't let anyone under thirteen read it, considering there is a rather large amount—too much for middle grade.
RATING: Four stars!
- Watch Your Back! by Nancee on 2/17/2016
I thoroughly enjoyed this reverse take on the age old story of Robinhood and his compassion for the poor. Steal from the rich to feed the poor. A bit of thievery was against the law, but someone had to provide for the poor and homeless.
Young people will love the excitement and beautiful love story that keep the suspense flowing. I'd rate the book PG-13 due to some violence that may not be appropriate for a younger age group.
Artfully descriptive with a fast pace, there's no room for boredom in Hedlund's most recent YA novel. Don't save this one just for the younger set. It's a great read for adults!
