A resource that does a lot more than just talk about how to become yourself. It shows you how. by Traci on 3/11/2015

We used the whole Bible study package in our small group of women (book, study guide and DVD). One could easily read the book without the other items however. The author takes you through many parts of our lives; childhood, friendships, hard times, faith. Full of stories and Scripture, this book helps you examine what you need to release to become more like the true self God created you to be. Stasi is very honest in the book and she gives you permission to be the same.

I am glad to know I am not alone! by Amanda on 10/20/2014

I am the writer behind the blog, Casseruola Dolce Della VIta. I was given this book for reviewing purposes. Many years ago I started my blog to look into some of the very same things "Becoming Myself: Embracing God's Dream of You" discusses. Stasi Eldredge takes an honest look into her own life and her process of "becoming". This book covers so many issues that affect woman of all ages, so its sure to touch you as you read it. No matter where you are in your personal journey, you will be able to find aspects in her life in which you can relate. Stasi discusses her personal issues with weight and food a lot in this book and talks about what God says about us. As I finish reading this book, I am glad t know that I am not alone!

We all have a desire to be known, treasured, and chosen. by Christian Shelf-Esteem on 9/4/2014

Becoming Myself: Embracing God’s Dream of You has something to offer for every woman. Through her personal struggles and victories, author Stasi Eledredge begins to unpack the complexities of womanhood. Initially she highlights the impact (for better or for worse) that our relationship with our mother has on how we see ourselves as adults. She continues with a comical side about how our hormones affect us at all stages of life. Stasi then goes on to more spiritual matters such as: the crippling effects of fear in our lives and in our Christian walk, our need for healthy friendships, the healing power of forgiveness, and our need/ability in Christ to break out of spiritual bondage. Furthermore, Stasi’s story struck a chord with me when she wrote concerning what it feels like to be “chosen.” We all have a desire to be known, treasured, and chosen - Christ is the only one who can fill those desires to the utmost.

Although I do not personally struggle with food addictions as the author has, I was able to connect through other aspects of her story. Throughout the book Stasi shares relevant and often heart-wrenching stories from other women she has ministered to. Undoubtedly these additions to the narrative help drive home the author’s main points and make this book relatable to a larger audience of women. For me the book lulled in a few places and was unable to keep me captivated.

Becoming Myself has pointed out a few areas in my life that I need healing--where my thoughts and actions haven’t lined up with God’s plan for me as a woman, a mother, and a wife. Stasi’s story is one of forgiveness, acceptance, redemption and renewal. I give Becoming Myself 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Becoming Myself--Embracing Who God Made You by Disciplemom Laura on 7/21/2013

Drawing from her own weight loss battles, author Stasi Eldredge describes the struggle for lasting change in her new book, "Becoming Myself: Embracing God's Dream of You."
Eldredge reminds readers that transformation is a process God uses to "heal our inner world so He can transform our outer world." She also says God is "in the business of setting us free, making each of us into the woman He always wanted us to be. The woman we always wanted to be."
As she leads readers through a variety of issues like looking at your past through the eyes of mercy, our mothers' effects on us, and friendships, Eldredge seeks to help readers let go of shame and self-discipline since neither are agents of change. She says, "God isn't waiting for me to get my act together in order to become worthy of his affection."
She goes on to say, "Though our past has shaped us, we are not our past. Though our failures and sin have had an effect on who we are, we are not defined by our failures or sin."
According to Eldredge, struggles, fear of intimacy, self-hatred, and the need to control our world, make us desperate for God, and "that is not a bad thing." She encourages readers to embrace who they are, to awaken to the desires and dreams God placed in them. "Let God begin to write your story. Invite him to show you your past through his eyes," she says.
Overall, this was a good book, reminding readers to live out their new identity in Christ, allowing God to transform them from the inside out. The author has clearly walked the path of which she speaks, and she genuinely hopes to help her readers through similar struggles.
I appreciate Eldredge's gentle reminders that I will never be successful in trying to change myself--that it is God who does the transforming, beginning on the inside, changing my attitudes.
At the same time, the book ended abruptly for me, leaving me wondering, "Okay, now what?" While I understand small group resources are forthcoming, I was disappointed in the lack of reflection or discussion questions to guide me through the process of applying some of the principles in the book. So, I look forward to seeing the accompanying resources when they are released.
