- If you want to know more about who Dr. Ben Carson is and what He Thinks This is the book for you. by Amy on 3/28/2015
As we are approaching the 2016 presidential race I have been curious about the political views of many of the people who are being talked about in the media as potential presidential candidates. As of this date Ben Carson, M.D. Has not declared his intention to run for president, but in his book America the Beautiful Dr. Carson gives a great deal of information about how he might function as a president of this great country of ours. America the Beautiful is packed full of information. Dr. Carson begins by discussing our founding fathers and the ideals that our country was built upon. He then moves very systematically through many different issues that our country is facing today and proposes very logical ideas for dealing with and working through those problems. I found this book to be very educational on many different levels. First of all Dr. Carson teaches the reader about himself and his background. Next he teaches the reader about our country from a historical context guiding us through many different elements of our history that was once taught in the schools at large, but is very rarely taught today. Finally Dr. Carson looks at our current state of affairs and problems that we as a nation need to deal with and proposes different possible options for working through those issues. If you are looking for more insight into who Dr. Ben Carson is and what he might do for our country, this is a great book to start with, it is highly informative, and will be helpful in forming your opinion about the man, Ben Carson, M.D and what he might do if he runs and wins the presidency.
** I received this book from Family Christian for the purpose of review. All opinions are my own.
- Feel good about America! by Susan on 3/23/2015
I was excited to read "America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great" after hearing Dr. Carson speak (on TV) at a recent prayer breakfast. This book combines vignettes from his life with his ideas on why America is great and how we can keep it that way.
At the risk of sounding political, my first thought just a few pages in was why couldn't this guy have been our first black President? Carson was raised by a single mom with a third-grade education. He faced a life of poverty and challenges, but he ended up becoming a world-famous neurosurgeon. Throughout the book, his common sense and practicality shines through. He would seem to be a great candidate, because he often alludes to the idea that all voices need to be heard, etc. He also emphasizes that doctors and other professionals have been trained to think logically and to solve problems, so wouldn't it make sense to elect them to office? If the US needs anything right now, it's people in charge who can make wise decisions and implement them.
Carson shares his views on capitalism, socialism, morality, defense, healthcare, and more. With news of his possible run for President, this book could be a great campaign tool for him. I'd vote for him! Interesting book, recommended. It will make you feel good -- or at least hopeful -- about America again.
- a good read for anyone who loves America by Vera on 3/22/2015
I truly don’t feel qualified to offer opinions, criticisms, or evaluations on anything written by an individual with the intellectual qualities of a neurosurgeon. Nor do I feel qualified to offer an evaluation or opinion on the quality of a written work dealing with the history of our great Nation and the political workings through its history. That being said, I will endeavor to give my insight into America the Beautiful by Ben Carson, M.D.
I see this as a book written by a medical professional and not a historian, and yet I see it presented in an easy to read, conversational tone – much like one would expect to be shared with the average American. Americans who want to learn more about our Nation and yet neither have the time nor inclination to read a heavy treatise on American History and the political in workings of American then and now will find this a good read.
There are chapter by chapter end notes listing quotes and references at the end of the book. This is good and affords the interested reader an opportunity to pursue the topic even more.
I found the quotes, some quite lengthy, from early Americans beautiful and encouraging and a wonderful re-read of history long ago studied. I like that Dr. Carson clearly pointed out that our Nation’s forefathers and early documents clearly state that this would be a nation with freedom of religion and not freedom from religion. It was refreshing to learn (for I had clearly forgotten) the tidbit of history where George Washington’s army was financed as was the American Revolution by a Jewish businessman when the colonies (states) would not provide tax monies to finance the Revolution, Haym Salomon.
Clearly Dr. Carson has a love for this nation in which he has succeeded so profoundly - rising from abject poverty to gain an education bestowing the title of neurosurgeon on him and affording him the privilege of being Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Medical Institute. Truly an American success story.
This book is a good read for anyone who loves America and who desires to see America remain Beautiful.
