- There is Hope: You are not alone by Anne Rightler on 3/17/2016
By Your Side is the first book in Candace Calvert's new series Crisis Team and is truly inspirational fiction. From the first page to the last, this medical suspense story has action and drama that will keep the pages turning. Macy, once a child caught in the heartaches of the foster care system, has grown up to be a competent ER nurse but not without emotional baggage--trust issues. Fletcher, devoted and beloved son, now a dashingly handsome cop has baggage too--life is not fair issues. Their first meet and greet is during a sniper crisis--and the ups and downs of their relationship begins. Calvert brings a realistic story to her readers, touching on issues that are known to and understood by many--unexpected death, effects of life-threatening illnesses, workplace violence, addiction, and mental illness. The importance of family and friendships and faith in God are key themes. The characters are believable, some loveable, and some not so loveable. One interesting group of people in the book is the Crisis Care Chaplain Service, individuals who are trained to help and be an 'angel' by the side of trauma victims, offering hope to those who have none. From young children, foster sisters and poetry writing aunts, readers will be charmed (or perhaps angered!) by the array of people in this book. This reader is looking forward to meeting some of them in the next book. Can smart and gutsy Macy and take charge kind of guy Fletcher work through the challenges they face? Can they forget the past and move on to a new future with each other? Can they recognize God's plan for their lives and learn to trust beyond themselves to find what will truly make them feel safe and loved?

- Drama All the Way! by Seasons of Opportunities on 7/21/2015
This book is full of suspense, mystery, and adventure along with a little romance. If you like ER stories or CSI mysteries you will enjoy this book, a combination of serial killer and ER drama.
Macy Wynn a California ER nurse, is talented and capable. Growing up in foster care helped her learn to fend for herself and trust no-one. When Houston cop, Fletcher Holt, moves to town, Macy's guard comes down a little. She begins to see life through new eyes. She has always run from God because of her difficult past. She struggles with surrendering her control over to Him.
Meanwhile, with a shooter on the loose, Macy seems to be coincidentally constantly in his target area. While those around her believe God has a plan for our lives, she feels like her life is falling apart. As the story reaches its climax, both Macy and Fletcher have to discover who they can trust. Is God really in control, are they just puppets on a string, or does He really care about the outcome of each of their lives.
There is so much more to this story... trust, forgiveness, love, faith. As you read you will bond with all the characters in the story. Each has a story of their own as they are tied together to help defeat the shooter and rescue those in his path. Candace has included plenty of food for thought in her writing. Your own faith may be challenged a little.

- Faith and Suspense – Wonderful God-Seeking Novel! by Jeanie on 7/12/2015
Candace Calvert’s writing gift shines in this much-anticipated novel, ‘By Your Side’! Trauma Nurse Macy Wynn and Deputy Fletcher Holt meet at an accident scene, one that neither had been called to. Macy and her mentor/financial planner, Elliot Rush, were on their way to a business dinner when they were stranded in traffic because of an accident. Fletch was on his way to clock out when he saw it happen. By the time they left, Macy had helped assess and comfort children from one involved vehicle, Fletch had helped where needed, then sent Elliot “don’t you have any idea who I am” Rush down the road with Macy at the wheel. The sniper hit for the first time that they were aware of, the bullet so close to Macy that the asphalt it hit ricocheted and hit her face. And Macy met a darling girl named Annie in foster care who reminded her of her foster care and troubled teen years. So many things occurred within the hour that would follow Macy for a long time to come.
Fletch was staying in northern California for the short term while his father was working in Alaska and his mother was undergoing cancer treatment in Sacramento. His position in Houston was on hold, so he was the new guy on the block with the local Sheriff’s office.
Their close friends are part of their story: Taylor, widowed about a year and now a new member of California Crisis Care, offering care and time for those with health care crises or enduring the loss of a loved one, and Chaplain Seth Donovan, heading this Crisis Care group.
Over the next several weeks Macy and Fletch ran into each other several times in the course of their work and as part of the ongoing investigation of the freeway sniper. They are drawn to each other, but since Macy is not a believer, they both know they couldn’t be more than friends. Yet as Macy and those she loves continue to be closer to the sniper, whose actions are escalating, they are both trying to find this person, before he or she kills again.
Several primary characters encountered people or situations that reminded them of painful, not-quite-resolved challenges from their past. Fletch had a rather stoic belief in the providence of the Lord – yes, he prayed and believed in God to move mountains, but he also tended to take care of things himself when he didn’t see the answers. Macy couldn’t find a reason to trust in the Lord. She thought herself to be self-reliant, not needing anyone. Her past life shouted evidence of that. Were it not for Russ Elliott and his wife, she wouldn’t have the career she currently does.
Throughout the novel are examples of ‘By Your Side’ and variations thereof, reminding us of Christ being with us, Christian friends and others with us. Yet can they – and we – live as Fletch’s mother, Charly said: “Now is the tough part. When you’re forced to ask yourself that hard question: Do you fully trust God, or do you simply trust him not to let something bad happen?” This is the question we must each face in the tough times of life in a broken world, and this amazing Christian author answers through the lives of her characters when facing cancer, sudden loss of a loved one, or trying to steer a loved one to faith in Christ.
I highly recommend Candace Calvert’s ‘By Your Side’ to all who appreciate novels of intense suspense that include those in health care professions, crises of faith, a hint of romance wrapped together in a story that demonstrates our daily need for Jesus and how that can look if we walk it out in our life. It will bring a blessing even amidst the mystery.

- Great book by Ramona on 4/20/2015
Oh how I love the works of Ms. Candace Calvert. I have read her Mercy Hospital series as well as her Grace Medical series and am ready to read the next book in the Crisis Team series.
From page one; I was involved in this book. I was on the highway with Fletcher Holt wondering where the shooter was. I was protecting the innocent people and I was facing a possible drunken driver. In this book we meet Annie Sims, a child in foster care. Macy Wynn, an ER nurse who spent time in foster care as a child. Fletcher Hold, a Deputy, transplanted from Texas to California. We meet so many other people and have the privilege of living some of their struggles with them. We also get to live some of their triumphs with them. Ms. Calvert does not give all her characters a rosy life and we finish the book wondering what will happen with some of the characters. Like all of Ms. Calvert’s books the characters have real life struggles, that do not end at the end of a chapter.
If you like medical mysteries with some and a side of romance this is the book for you. Thank you Ms. Calvert for another wonderful book.
- Review from Rambles of a SAHM by Fitzysmom on 4/13/2015
By God's grace alone I have never been faced with a severe enough emergency to warrant a visit from a Crises Care Team. I have a friend who is a chaplain with our local fire department and I thought I knew what he did but this novel has opened my eyes to something completely new.
Candace Calvert has done a phenomenal job of bringing to life a cast of characters that allow us to go inside the world of crisis counseling. Through some very traumatic situations we get to see how a group of giving and selfless individuals minister to others during very vulnerable times in their lives.
While the two main characters aren't counselors, one is an ER nurse and the other is a deputy, they both work in an environment that interacts with these counselors. I liked Macy Wynn from the start. She's strong on the outside but so vulnerable on the inside. Fletcher Holt is destine to make many female readers swoon. He is a man of deep faith and character but still flawed and reliant on his family and his God to see him through. From the very first meeting of these two I was cheering them on as they tip toed through some rough patches in order to have a relationship.
By Your Side is a bit longer that your average contemporary romance but it is worth every extra minute it takes to read. The dialogue is witty and engaging and the action and suspense make the pages just fly by. This is a great beginning to what looks to be an interesting series.

- Faith, Fear, Romance, and Adrenaline... by Babbling Becky L. on 4/12/2015
Faith, fear, romance, and adrenaline all fight for supremacy in Candace Calvert's By Your Side, book one of the Crisis Team series. Calvert shows us the gritty side of foster care through Trauma care nurse Macy Wynn. Macy has learned through foster care ,..."that was the worst part. Not knowing anything for sure. Where you'd sleep, what you'd eat, who was nice...or who might want to hurt you in ways you couldn't even understand. You were never, ever sure. You hung onto hope because it was all you had, but after a while, even hope packed up and moved on. You kept your favorite things in a bag you could take with you at a moment's notice. And you only trusted yourself." Macy lives by this credo, refusing God, who allowed herself and her sister to have a childhood best forgotten, except for one foster parent. Speaking of exceptions, Macy DOES trust one person, her financial advisor, who is the closest thing to family she has.
We also meet policeman Fletcher Holt. Fletcher becomes involved with the initial sniper situation where he meets Macy, and continues to try to offer her protection as uncertainty becomes the name of the game. Fletcher has his own uncertainties-the girl back home and his mother's current bout with cancer, to name a few. Fletcher's mother challenges his faith:"Now is the tough part. When you're forced to ask yourself the hard question:Do you FULLY trust God, or do you simply trust Him to keep you safe?"
With heart-pounding action, themes of faith that resonate with the reader's heart, and breath-taking word pictures of Yosemite, Calvert has produced another medical miracle!

- a gentle thread of romance by Vera on 3/20/2015
When trained nurse turned successful novelist considers crisis situations, you have a series of books called Crisis Team emerge. Calvert creates realistic and heroic yet human characters out of ER nurses and physicians, chaplains, EMS personnel, and law enforcement personnel.
As this unjoined team works to heal and relieve the stresses of their professions and the cruelties of life and keep the community a safe place in which to live, a lone gunman stalks his prey. Lives are lost randomly and he can’t seemingly be found.
What happens when the healers both of physical and emotional injuries need help themselves? Who is their helper? What happens when those trying to build a life have their dreams and hopes shattered.
Woven into the thread of the Crisis Team’s very lives is a gentle thread of romance. A blossoming and tender story that is sure to capture the interest of man or woman alike as they cruise the pages of By Your Side.
Who doesn’t love a bit of romance, touch of suspense, and medical or emergency crisis all mixed together. Candace Calvert has brought us another well-written story from her plethora of experience.
