  • New Album from The City Harmonic

Posted on July 29, 2013 by Family Christian

Internationally acclaimed band, The City Harmonic, is set to release globally its highly anticipated sophomore album, HEART, September 3 through Integrity Music.  The 14 songs on HEART are underscored by the cinematic and communal aesthetic prominent in all of the band’s music while building from where the band left off with its widely acclaimed, JUNO Award-winning I Have A Dream (It Feels Like Home).  Reflecting life lived by the band members since their full-length debut, the new album shifts from the dream of what could and should be to the complexities of how to follow the true humanity of Christ’s example in the world.

Co-produced by the band - vocalist/songwriter and pianist Elias Dummer, bassist Eric Fusilier, guitarist Aaron Powell and drummer Josh Vanderlaan - and Jared Fox, HEART places Christ at the center while delving into themes of grace, discipleship and being, and becoming, truly human, all the while giving the listener permission to sing out in hope, in hurt.

“We set out to write an album ‘on being, and becoming, human,’ but, in a way, it’s about image bearing,” says Elias.  “By that I mean that yes, we’re human — and the Bible tells us that we’re made in the image of God and each and every human has an inherited dignity as a result. But there’s more to it than that…God made this universe around us and often refers to the cosmos as a temple. I mean if you stop and think about the role an ‘image’ or ‘statue’ might play in a temple, you begin to see that we humans have quite a role to play. Whatever our present circumstances, the biggest challenge before us is to recognize that in Christ we’ve been given the responsibility and capacity to become like Him, and as we do, we are becoming exactly the kind of humans we were meant to be from the beginning.

“People have always talked about ‘the square’ representing the physical, the tangible, and the circle representing the spirit, God,” continues Elias, making reference to the new album cover artwork. “How do you square the circle? How do you make these things connect?  Jesus was the perfect man and God.  Only in Jesus do we have the ability to say, ‘I’m a whole person, not a broken apart thing, whole but broken.’ On HEART, we try to unpack what it means to be fully human.”

At the core of the new album is the first radio single, “City on a Hill,” which is steeped in the Beatitudes found in Matthew 5.

“‘A City On A Hill’ takes the high concept view of Christ and brings it down to earth in the form of the very things he said in the Sermon on the Mount,” says Elias.  “It also forms a natural transition into the balance of the album which attempts to marry the ideals with our real lives.

“In Christ, God has given us the perfect example to live by, and the means to live that way,” adds Elias. “For the Christian, discipleship isn’t simply adding knowledge to our lives, but it’s to become increasingly more like the human example we’ve been given – to become ‘little Christs,’ and carry our cross through the mud and mire of a broken world in the knowledge that by the grace of God we arise brand new.”

In the past two years, life has hit The City Harmonic ‘square on.’ They went from working day jobs to recording and touring full time. Aaron had his first child, Josh was married, Elias had his fourth child and Eric was diagnosed with cancer. In a very real sense, life set the context for HEART.

One of the songs on the album, “Strong,” written by Elias and Eric, grew from a place of vulnerability in the middle of Eric’s battle with cancer. “I wasn’t really in a place to write anything,” Eric confesses. “Emotionally, I felt like a child who had been let down by his parents for the first time.  I just couldn’t see [my illness] as a blessing.  I couldn’t connect with God. To confront that stuff and write, ‘I am strong in my weakness,’ was really difficult because I couldn’t deny how I really felt...”

Near the one-year anniversary of the stem cell transplant that saved his life, Eric’s cancer is in remission. “Being on the other side of it, my emotions now line up with what I believe. God really has been there the whole time, using this for the good. It’s a clear picture of God’s people coming together, working together... a profound experience.”

With Eric planning to rejoin the group on the road, having been sidelined since his cancer diagnosis early last year, The City Harmonic launches their headline tour with special guests Shawn McDonald in October.

Forming nearly three years ago, The City Harmonic went from anonymity to widespread acclaim, headlining tours across North America and gathering numerous awards along the way.

  • Keith & Kristyn Getty Release Live Album

Posted on July 25, 2013 by Family Christian

Getty Music announces the release of the first live album from Keith and Kristyn Getty, which was recorded at The Gospel Coalition in Orlando, FL, this past spring. Keith and Kristyn Getty Live at The Gospel Coalition is produced by Ed Cash and features 13 previously-released songs that are heard live on a recording for the first time, along with a new tune, Lift High the Name of Jesus (co-written by the Gettys and Cash), and some of the Getty’s favorite traditional hymns. The project will be available September 10, 2013.

“Working with Keith and Kristyn has been one of the great joys of my career,” says Cash. “First and foremost, their songs are packed full of theological truth, but their commitment to musical excellence and great melodies with respect to church tradition is unparalleled. This album is a fabulous collection of songs recorded in a live atmosphere with a real congregation exalting the Almighty. I tend to crave authenticity, especially with live records, and this project is chock-full of it. At the same time, the album has a professionalism due to the extremely high caliber nature of the players, and of course the driving excellence of Keith's piano playing and Kristyn's voice.”

Keith and Kristyn Getty Live at The Gospel Coalition is comprised of several performances occurring during the 5-day conference that included sermons from such well-known speakers as Tim Keller, Senior Pastor of Redeemer Church in New York City/Author; John Piper, Founder/Teacher of desiringGod.org; and Don Carson, Research Professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Keller adds, “The 2013 Gospel Coalition National Conference blended the spoken Word and the sung Word in an unforgettable way. Substantive expositions of the Biblical text were interwoven with the Gettys’ theologically-rich worship hymns. Together they truly did ‘tune our hearts to sing His grace.’”

The Gettys are in their homeland of Northern Ireland spending time on a songwriting sabbatical and reconnecting with family and friends. When they return to the States in late August, they will begin rehearsals for a fall tour in support of the new project that will run September-November and crisscross the country.

  • SHINE BRIGHT BABY DEBUTS ALBUM

Posted on July 24, 2013 by Family Christian

Following the success of their single “Beautiful Love,” which hit radio in May, Shine Bright Baby’s anticipated debut project is available now in stores and online.  Dreamers, created and produced by Matt Arcaini, Mike “X” O’Conner, Tofer Brown and Pete Kipley, is the debut LP belonging to the BEC Recordings quartet and consists of an inventive mixture of pop, rock, electronic and modern worship music.

After just a few short weeks on radio, “Beautiful Love” has climbed to No. 8 on the Hot AC/CHR charts.  Recent press tout the debut including a “rock spotlight” in the current issue of CCM Magazine applauding Shine Bright Baby on “not being shy in allowing their faith to radiate boldly, all the while making apparent their musical commitment to excellence.”

Comprised of four gifted musicians, each from Orville, Ohio, Shine Bright Baby features Emily Irene on vocals, guitarist Nathan Fertig, Joshua Fink on keys, guitars and vocals, and Karl Wendel on drums.  Friends before they were bandmates, Emily and Nathan began performing in 2007 amongst the local scene in both mainstream settings and Christian circles.  Soon after, Joshua and Karl joined Emily and Nathan to complete the quartet, whose unique band name comes from Philippians 2.

“After realizing God’s plan for the band, we wanted to take what that verse said and apply it to the band’s mission and what we stood for,” shares Joshua.  “Emily wanted it to be more fun and playful, so she tacked ‘Baby’ on the end and it just stuck."

“We all come from church backgrounds, all leading worship at church at various points of life,” says Karl.  “Anytime we’re on that stage, our goal is to glorify God and worship through our instruments and voices, and hopefully in turn, help others be able to draw closer to God.”

One of the band’s personal favorites from Dreamers is “Made To Glow,” a song about letting God’s love shine in everyone’s daily actions, while the piano/acoustic ballad “Love Restores” was written in the wake of a highly publicized school shooting near the band’s hometown.  The group also shows its more aggressive side on “The Brave Ones,” a guitar-charged anthem centered on living a bold life of faith with a little help from Disciple front man Kevin Young.

Shine Bright Baby is on an extensive tour in support of Dreamers, having wrapped up the Acquire The Fire Tour and Air1’s Club Awesome Tour.  The band will also perform at numerous festivals throughout the remainder of the summer and fall.

  • Check Out New Artist Soulfire Revolution

Posted on July 22, 2013 by Family Christian

Capitol Christian Music Group (CCMG) announces the signing of Soulfire Revolution, a worship band hailing from Bogota, Colombia, to its list of acclaimed artists.  Soulfire Revolution’s title track – featuring Kim Walker-Smith of Jesus Culture – goes by the same name as their first project, Revival.  Proof that their music and scope of ministry extends beyond just one language, Revival is set to release on August 13.
Soulfire Revolution primarily serves as a worship band born out of Mision Carismatica Interncional (MCI) in Bogota, a church originated by husband and wife team Cesar and Claudia Castellanos.  Currently, MCI averages 70,000 people in attendance on Sunday mornings in Bogota, growing from the group of eight that first began gathering in the Castellanos’ living room nearly 30 years ago.

Cesar and Claudia have always been focused on raising a family who loves and serves God, a primary goal that ultimately would pave the way for Soulfire Revolution.  Feeling the call to ministry following a three-day MCI retreat known as “Encounter” just a few years ago, the Castellanos’ daughter Lorena, now the lead singer for Soulfire Revolution, first felt God’s call to ministry.

“I was 12 when I went to my first Encounter, and up until that point, I wasn’t really interested in church.  I just went because I was the pastor’s daughter, and my parents were there,” Lorena shares.  “But it was during those three days when I truly had an encounter with God.  I had the conviction that God could really use me, and I never turned back.”

Now comprised of two married couples, Lorena Castellanos (vocals) and her husband Julian Gamba (bass), and Paola Sanchez (drums) and husband Jose Anthony Catacoli (lead guitar), plus Lorena’s brother-in-law Richard Harding (lead vocals and guitar), Soulfire Revolution was started out of a mutual love of music that points people toward the one true Hope.

Produced by The Myriad frontman and longtime Jesus Culture producer Jeremy Edwardson, and recorded in his studio in northern California, Revival not only celebrates the beauty of God’s creation in the anthemic standout “Count the Stars,” which features a guest appearance from the band’s friend Martin Smith (Delirious) but digs deep into truly leaning on God for everything in “Place of Surrender,” where Soulfire Revolution collaborated with noted songwriter Jason Ingram (Brandon Heath, Bebo Norman).  With “Spirit Break Out,” the band displays a different side of worship with a rap interlude from none other than TobyMac.  This cover of the United Kingdom-based group Worship Central is a moment where substance and style blend seamlessly.

Revival is only the beginning of what will continue to be a busy season for Soulfire Revolution.  In addition to touring on their own and continuing to minister at their home churches, Soulfire Revolution looks forward to partnering with other artists in sharing a message of salvation and hope that comes in a thriving relationship with Jesus.

  • MATTHEW WEST RELEASES INTO THE LIGHT - DELUXE EDITION

Posted on July 16, 2013 by Family Christian

Four-time GRAMMY® nominee, singer, songwriter and storyteller Matthew West debuts his deluxe edition CD and DVD, Into The Light: Life Stories & Live Songs, on August 13 (Sparrow Records). This deluxe version shares the songs found on the acclaimed and GRAMMY-nominated album Into The Light, along with a DVD featuring live concert footage interspersed with the people whose stories have inspired the songs.

A few of the songs featured on Into The Light: Life Stories & Live Songs are the No. 1 hits “Forgiveness,” “Hello, My Name Is” and “Strong Enough.” Each share about real-life topics and struggles, such as addiction, forgiveness, living out your faith, restoration, being made in God's image, and more. Fans will be able to hear these songs and much more when West kicks off his 30+ city "Into The Light Tour," which is slated to begin in September. Tour dates are listed below.

"Since I began the journey of telling the stories of people's lives through my music a few years ago, it has transformed not only the songs I have written but also the way we bring those songs and stories to the audiences at our live shows," Matthew West shares. "Many have asked me where they can find these unique videos that we use during the show telling the stories behind the songs. Until now, I haven't had anywhere to send them. This new DVD allows people to take this emotionally charged and uplifting experience home with them; to share with friends or family who they know might relate and be encouraged by a certain story or song. There is power in a story. I'm so proud of this project and believe it will encourage people to realize the power that lies within their story as well!"

His current single "Hello, My Name Is" recently notched its 8th week at No. 1 on the National Christian Audience chart, with an audience of 9.8 million. Additionally, the song's video just released, highlighting a live performance from this year's successful WinterJam Tour.

Posted on July 16, 2013 by Family Christian

GRAMMY®-nominated artist Mandisa is calling out all Overcomers in her latest project which drops on August 27. The long-awaited fourth studio album, Overcomer, comes over two years since the release of her critically revered and best selling GRAMMY®-nominated record, What If We Were Real, which brought on fan favorites and No. 1 songs such as “Stronger” and “Good Morning.” "Overcomer" is the lead single from the album and is an extension of the impactful message once began with her song “Stronger,” an anthem that there is hope in the midst of life’s battles.

Mandisa says, "I recorded both the song and the album to fuel faith, empower people, and remind those facing a battle, that all of the strength, power, and weapons of warfare they need is readily available to them. We are all overcomers."

With caution-to-the-wind melodies weaved throughout the record, anchored by emotional songs like her open letter to her brother in “Dear John,” Overcomer is set to be Mandisa’s most impactful release to date. Many songs were co-written by critically acclaimed artists and friends including Chris August ("Praying For You"), Israel Houghton (“At All Times”), Tiffany Lee, aka Plumb ("Dear John"), Britt Nicole and Cindy Morgan (“Where You Begin”) and Matthew West ("The Distance").  This fall, Mandisa will once again embark on six-time GRAMMY® winner TobyMac’s acclaimed "Hits Deep Tour." • Laura Story - God of Every Story

Posted on July 11, 2013 by Family Christian

Talented worship leader and songwriter Laura Story is best known for her inspirational hit “Blessings” and co-writing “Indescribable,” a Chris Tomlin anthem. With only two albums to her credit, she’s already an award winner several times over. “Blessings” was certified Digital Gold and nabbed a 2012 Billboard Music Award, GRAMMY® and helped Laura to four Dove Award wins.

Now, with her third studio album, God of Every Story, Laura returns to that deep place of vulnerability before the Lord and honesty with herself. Award- winning producer Ed Cash helmed the deeply personal project, and their shared Carolina roots led to the incorporation of acoustic and epic instruments into this worshipful pop album.

Lyrically, God of Every Story draws from Laura’s own life. Her husband’s brain tumor early in their marriage led the young family down a painful path she wouldn’t have chosen, but one that deepened her faith and her music. The resulting songs show God’s love and grace intersecting with real life. The album is a wonderful reminder that despite our questions or circumstances, we continue to praise Him because we know He is the keeper of the stars.

Listen to a snippet of Laura's new single here

"It was hard to know where to start after my last album. The song Blessings started as a diary entry and God blew us away by using it in the lives of so many around the world. And as I began to write for my new project "God of Every Story", I went back to that deep place of vulnerability before the Lord, and honesty -- with myself. The path God has led our family down is not one I would have chosen for myself. It has been much harder than I had envisioned, yet it has required deeper faith than I ever thought myself capable of. And that's what God of every story is really about: It’s trusting that the same God who orchestrates the rising and the setting of the sun each day pays the same attention to every detail of my life. It’s believing that at the end of the day, we will look back on this amazing God story that is my life and view it as a beautiful sunset, where the blues and reds, the laughter and tears, all meld together to show the faithfulness of God in a way that makes us stand in applause."

"God of Every Story" is a collection of songs about where God's love and grace intersect with our real life situations. It’s about God working all things together for good and love always winning. It’s a celebration of God's faithfulness, even when we don't always understand His plan this side of heaven. Yet we praise Him because He is the keeper of the stars, the One who holds all things together and always, always, deserves our worship.

One of my favorite things about making this record was the privilege of working with Ed Cash. Ed and I met when I was a sophomore in college and being both from the Carolinas, we love exploring how acoustic and more folky instruments can be used in contemporary Christian music. Ed did a great job both pulling from my roots as well as stretching me to new places creatively.

  • Dara Maclean - New Album - Wanted

Posted on July 10, 2013 by Family Christian

Dara Maclean is scheduled to release her sophomore album, Wanted, on September 24. The album’s title track and lead single grabbed early attention jumping seven spots at radio to No. 30 on NCA chart this past week. Produced by Paul Mabury (All Sons & Daughters, Hillsong, Meredith Andrews), Wanted is the eagerly-awaited follow-up to Maclean’s debut album, You Got My Attention.

For Maclean, both a passionate artist and advocate for the International Justice Mission, an organization that is pioneering the fight against human trafficking, this album is much more than just a compilation of songs. “This album is for those broken, the lost and the ones in need of rescue. It’s for me and it’s for them, whether ‘they’ are next door or half way across the world. This record is a reminder that through God’s grace and redemption, He has made us good enough, He sees us as ‘blameless.’ We’ve been forgiven and we can find the peace, satisfaction and rest we’re looking for in Him,” said Maclean. “This record is my mouthpiece to raise the volume of the already screaming heartbeat of the Father, crying ‘Set My People Free.’ When life hits in the hardest ways, and you need peace and you need an answer, let’s take Him at His word and together learn about truth, discover sustaining hope and put all of our trust in the only answer, God.”

“She genuinely cares for people and has a story to tell; she genuinely wants to see people changed,” said Mabury. “I heard a girl singing at the beginning…now I hear a woman singing.”

Sonically, Wanted reveals Maclean’s musical upbringing and love for powerful, soul-steeped vocalists from Etta James to Lauryn Hill.  This influence can be seen throughout the album that infuses her soaring vocals with modern pop and soul melodies thanks to the help of multi-talented producer Mabury. “Paul knows the world of worship and he’s a songwriter, a producer and one of the best drummers that I’ve heard,” said Maclean. “He is also extremely well-versed in the music that moves me. He has this backbone of soul and took the time to ‘get me’ and wanted to make music that was true to that.”

During the past two years Maclean, who embraces song writing equally as much as being a vocalist, wrote heavily in preparation for this album. She co-wrote each of the 12 tracks on Wanted and loved getting to write with some of her favorites including Paul Mabury, Jason Ingram (Brandon Heath, Bebo Norman), Dave Barnes (Blake Shelton, Bebo Norman) and Cindy Morgan (Amy Grant, Mark Schultz).
