Night’s chill tickled her skin. Lonnie pressed her hands together and glanced up. He was even more handsome up close. Having grown up the shy, awkward daughter of Joel Sawyer, she’d hardly spoken to any boy, let alone the one who had mothers whispering warnings in their daughter’s ears and fathers loading shotguns.

Pretty Lonnie Sawyer is shy and innocent, used to fading into the background within her family, and among the creeks and hollows of the Appalachian hills. Though her family is poor and her father abusive, she clings to a quiet faith.  But when handsome ladies’ man and bluegrass musician Gideon O’Riley steals a kiss, that one action seals her fate.

Her father forces her into a hasty marriage with Gideon—a man she barely knows and does not love. Equally frustrated and confused by his new responsibilities, Gideon yearns for a fresh start, forcing  Lonnie on an arduous journey away from her home in Rocky Knob.

A Story You Won't Soon Forget! by Judy on 12/15/13

Be Still My Soul is author Joanne Bischof’s first novel. I would like to tell you that this was an excellent story in so many ways. She covered it all, hardships that fit the time and setting of this book, sins committed, lessons learned, and faith bigger than a mustard seed. A road of trial and error, a road filled with disappointments.

While I don’t believe any kind of abuse in a relationship is acceptable, I totally felt Gideon’s frustration in the hand he was dealt. Having said this, please know that he brought a lot of this on himself.

I applaud Lonnie for not accepting Gideon’s behavior and treatment of her. She suffered enough of it from her own father.

Lonnie and Gideon grew on me and I soon found that I wanted to see this couple together; to work things out, and to put God first. Would Gideon grow up and see what he would lose if he didn’t change his ways? Would he allow God to guide his steps? Would and could Lonnie ever forgive him?

I won book three in this series on LibraryThing and I knew that I needed to buy and read books 1 and 2 before starting book three. I can’t wait to start on book 2, Though My Heart Is Torn to follow what happens to Lonnie and Gideon.

I highly recommend this book. It is a 5+ star book in my opinion.

Be Still My Soul, book one in The Cadence of Grace series by Joanne Bischof, is a beautifully crafted and moving novel set in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia at the turn of the last century. Joanne writes that this series "weaves together the threads of yearning, hope, and redemption to form a tale that I hope will touch your heart, stir your senses, and evoke a greater understanding for the majestic God who created every hue and surface of the mountains I hold so dear."

Publisher's description

Night’s chill tickled her skin. Lonnie pressed her hands together and glanced up. He was even more handsome up close. Having grown up the shy, awkward daughter of Joel Sawyer, she’d hardly spoken to any boy, let alone the one who had mothers whispering warnings in their daughter’s ears and fathers loading shotguns.

Her father forces her into a hasty marriage with Gideon—a man she barely knows and does not love. Equally frustrated and confused by his new responsibilities, Gideon yearns for a fresh start, forcing Lonnie on an arduous journey away from her home in Rocky Knob. Her distant groom can’t seem to surrender his rage at the injustice of the forced matrimony or give Lonnie any claim in his life.

My thoughts

To put it simply, I fell in love with everything about Be Still My Soul - Joanne's lyrical writing, the Appalachian setting, rich characterization, the use of music, and the theme of God's grace. The phrase "heartfelt fiction" on her website is certainly an accurate description. Jebediah and Elsie, warm and endearing supporting characters, play a strong part in this story.

The Blue Ridge mountains of Appalachia felt like one of the main characters. If you grew up with the Walton family or read Catherine Marshall's Christy, you will appreciate how beautifully Joanne captured the essence of the region - its rugged beauty amidst great poverty, the occasional moonshine still and shotgun wedding, a proud and hard-working people who expressed joy and hope through music.

There's not a lot to like about Gideon in the beginning. He's a ladies' man, immature, cares only about himself, and looks to blame others for his actions. Lonnie, in spite of growing up with an abusive father, is a sweet, gentle, shy young lady with a quiet faith, instilled by her loving aunt. Happiness and contentment seem doubtful when marriage is forced on this unlikely couple. On their wedding day, "Lonnie glanced around the churchyard decorated only with dried summer grasses and early autumn leaves. She'd always imagined her wedding would have peach cobbler and plenty of waltzes. Her friends would have toasted to the happy couple, and she would want this day to last as long as possible. She would have danced into the night with her new husband, until the stars lighted their path home. But when Gideon's shoulder brushed against hers, she knew that dream was gone."

The spiritual theme is quiet in this story, evidenced by Lonnie's quiet faith, but ever present nonetheless. It is a sign of an author's talent when you can be drawn to such an unlovely character as Gideon - and his slow, gradual redemption is moving and inspiring. "Gideon tried to remember what it was he'd seen in Lonnie. It was more than her sweetness, her goodness. He saw faith. He didn't know what it entailed, but he knew she had always believed there was something redeemable in him. Could he not think the same?" Lonnie's faith is shown through the words of this beautiful hymn that she sings . . .

Come, Thou Fount of every bless, tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount. I'm fixed upon it, mount of Thy redeeming love.

Be Still My Soul is a story of gently growing trust and love, grace and redemption. I found it to be a beautiful, haunting story. I highly recommend it to all lovers of romantic historical fiction that inspires.

The next book in this series, Though My Heart Is Torn, released on April 2, 2013. To learn more about Joanne and her books, visit her website at joannebischof.com.

My review for BE STILL MY SOUL by Joanne Bischof
I knew just by looking at the cover that I would enjoy this story. Joanne Bischof spun a tale that totally captivated my soul. Gideon and Lonnie's story will tear at your heart strings. Two young people who at first seem so incompatible. But, as the story progresses, you can feel God's presence helping them to overcome hurt, fear and hopelessness. Several times I found myself gasping, grimacing, laughing and crying. It is a wonderfully written story that I highly recommend to anyone who is looking for something that will leave you feeling closer to God and his promises. “His eye is on the sparrow”.

Wonderful story of forgiveness and redemption by J Rumberger on 9/25/12

Be Still My Soul, not only kept me up late at night when I wanted to read “just one more chapter” but also brought tears to my eyes throughout the last chapters. I owe that to the amazing storytelling abilities of Joanne Bischof and her keen sense of details and her character’s emotions.

Be Still My Soul is the story of Lonnie and Gideon, two young residents of the Appalachian hills in the early 1900's. Brought together by a first kiss and an unplanned and unwanted marriage, the two begin a life together. Their marriage is one that is filled with uncertainty by Lonnie, anger by Gideon and the lack of love by both. But as Gideon determines to find a fresh start, they journey far away from home, only to discover an older couple who sees in them what no one else could. Only time will tell if Lonnie’s faith and Gideon’s fresh start can bring their hearts together as one.

Be Still My Soul truly is a story of forgiveness and redemption. The trials and joys that Lonnie and Gideon face are very realistic and their reactions to what life throws in their paths are what makes this book such a page-turner. Joanne doesn’t mince words and shows exactly how cruel and harsh the world can be, but at the same time also shows how the hard times help us grow and mature and come to a fuller understanding and appreciation of the good that happens in life as well.

I can’t wait for the next chapter in Lonnie and Gideon’s life, and luckily I won’t have to wait for long. The next book in the Cadence of Grace Series, Though My Heart is Torn, will be released this spring.

Note: I received this book free from the publisher for my honest review. The opinions are solely my own.

This book was an amazing read! As the first book by Joanne Bischof it is easy to see that this very talented author is going to have many more wonderful books for us to enjoy.

I became so engrosed in the lives of these amazing characters. I cried when they cried, laughed when they laughed, and loved when they loved. The author does an amazing job of describing what these characters are going through and how they are feeling. I loved Lonnie's relationship with God and loved watching her grow into a strong and courageous woman of God.

It is very clear that Gideon had a lot more growing up to do and the book really focused on his path and how he changed from a young boy into a man. Through all of this though we also watch Lonnie accept this path that has been thrust upon her with a wonderful and amazing faith in God.

I pray that as I go through the trials of this life I can be as faithful, strong, and courageous as Lonnie O'Riley.

I give Be Still My Soul by Joanne Bischof 5 stars. This book is a must read for everyone. Great job Joanne Bischof and I look forward to reading more of your work!

I just finished the debut novel of Joanne Bischof, titled "Be Still My Soul." If you enjoy Christian fiction, particularly historical romance, you will enjoy this book.

This book is full of tragedy and hardships, but more than that it shows the main character's strength in her faith and forgiveness. It seems like one thing after another goes wrong for Lonnie Sawyer but she clings to her faith when everything else seems hopeless to her.

This book was an easy read - I finished it in two nights of reading - but it was very well written. I see that this is the first book of a series and I would be very interested to see who the focus of the next book is going to be.

I did feel that things tied up just a bit too nicely in the end, but if you're looking for a happy ending, it's definitely there. Like I said, if you enjoy Christian fiction of the historical romance variety, this is a book you will most likely enjoy.

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.
