Top-Notch Christian Thriller by Jeanie on 1/10/2015

Patricia Bradley has a hit with this well-written novel of faith, murder, and betrayal! Promise to Protect is an exciting, edge of the seat thriller with sufficient plot twists to keep the fan of mysteries with a dash of romance entranced for hours. The second book in the Logan Point series, it can be read as a stand-alone mystery without having read the earlier book.
With the Lord’s help, the widowed Dr. Leigh Somerall has overcome her rocky start in life to become a respected emergency room physician and excellent mother to her son, TJ. She returned to Logan Point to fulfill scholarship requirements by working at a free clinic; she had to stay for one year, then she planned to pursue a previously-offered position at Johns Hopkins.
Acting Sheriff Ben Logan had once been a very close friend, then sweetheart, of Leigh until she broke up without a realistic reason. She had a secret that broke them up, then one that was a real whopper, one that nobody in his family could ever learn about. Leigh had avoided Ben when she returned to Logan Point because of those secrets, convinced that revealing the truth couldn’t possibly set her free.
Ben’s father, Sheriff Tom Logan, had been shot in the line of duty. During surgery to remove the bullet, he had a stroke that robbed him of the ability to speak or move independently. Frustrated with his limitations, he was unable to communicate any evidence of who shot him, and the case went cold.
Leigh loved her older brother, Tony Jackson, a brilliant CFO and a second father to TJ. She loved Tony enough that she went against her instincts to contact Acting Sheriff Ben Logan for him, asking him to contact Tony to meet with him to turn over evidence, including possibly who shot Ben’s father. Unfortunately Ben arrived to meet Tony in time to cradle the shot, dying man minus the flash drive of information. He hesitantly agreed to Tony’s last wish to promise to protect Leigh.
After Tony’s death, Leigh and TJ were being pursued, probably by those who killed Tony. First they found her late grandmother’s home where they lived with Tony trashed, then days later it was set on fire. After the fire, Ben had to find a way to keep Leigh and TJ safe. The only option was that they stay TJ at Ben’s parents’ home which had top-of-the-line security gates and system. TJ proceeded to help Ben’s father do things to make his therapy fun, and Sheriff Tom finally began to improve. Ben’s mother is happy to have them there, but Leigh could see in his father’s eyes that she was not welcome.
The characters were so well developed throughout the book that finishing the book was like leaving behind friends. I especially like Leigh and her interactions with her best friend, Sarah, and Emily, her boss at the free clinic and Ben’s sister. I also appreciate Leigh’s and Ben’s struggle with faith in the Lord and how the Lord didn’t let them go; it was portrayed well and very realistically.
The plot is complex with surprising twists. This reader was very pleased with how well and smoothly this roller-coaster ride mystery unfolded, and found that it was very hard to put it down. The background of the characters and situations was laid out as needed. Especially poignant was seeing how TJ enjoyed helping Ben’s father, his desire to have a father again since the death of his own father, and how Leigh worked hard to keep the lid on her secrets. The plot is fully executed with no stones left unturned.
I highly recommend Promise to Protect to adults of any age who appreciate a well-written thriller with Christian values and the hint of romance. It is definitely a worthy read!

Small Towns Can be Murder by Babbling Becky L on 11/22/2014

Small towns can be murder. Tony Jackson, small business CFO and big-time gambler, dies in Sheriff Ben Logan's arms. But not before hinting he knows who shot Ben's sheriff father and making Ben promise to protect Tony's beautiful sister, Dr. Leigh Somerall.

What an exciting ride this story is! A missing pen drive, stolen gun parts, a love triangle, secrets, and main characters constantly besieged by dangers (you'll have to read the book to see the varied kinds)! Wow!

I love how faith plays a prominent part in resolving the personal issues of the main characters, though it takes them a long time to do so. The Bible talks about working out our own salvation with fear and trembling. I also love the use of an I-Pad in the story in a special way!

One parting quotable, so true..."people are going to believe what they want to. Truth doesn't matter-- they'll go with what they think they see every time." (Deputy Wade Hatcher)

This may be book two in the series, but it stands alone quite well. However, I for one am going hunting for book one and eventually book three!!

I received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

A Promise to Protect
Patricia Bradley

Book Summary: Acting Sheriff Ben Logan hasn't heard from Leigh Somerall in a very long time, but it doesn't mean he can get her--or their whirlwind romance of ten years ago--out of his head. When she calls out of the blue, it is with a strange request to protect her brother, Tony. When Tony dies just days later, Ben is charged with a different task--protecting Leigh and her nine-year-old son, TJ, from the killers. But how can Ben keep an eye on Leigh if she's doing everything in her power to avoid him? And could the secret that Leigh is keeping change Ben's life forever? Suspense, intrigue, and a touch of romance make A Promise to Protect perfect for readers who like their stories with a hearty dose of mystery.

Review: The story was electric with the who did it! I liked Ben from the first book. There were times when I did not care for Leigh or Ben. Thankfully as the book progressed they grew on me. I think the mystery was exciting a good standalone book if someone has not read the first in the series. It is not necessary to have read the first book to become engrossed in the story. T.J. is a cut kid and more flexible at times than Leigh. She is determined to keep her secret while bigger intrigue is swirling about them. The who did it kept me on my toes. One person is disclosed early on but the brains behind who murdered Tony is the real suspense. There are many things going on or wrong for Ben but that is the thrill of the suspense. The ending was quick and the book was definitely worth the read! Loved the first book and enjoyed the second in the series. I will definitely be waiting for a third!
I would like to thank Net Galley and Revell for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.

Great Romantic Suspense! by Roxanne on 11/11/2014

A Promise to Protect by Patricia Bradley is tightly woven novel full of love, betrayal, danger and redemption.

Ben Logan and Leigh Somerall had a college romance a decade ago. Now, Dr. Leigh Somerall has returned to the small town she couldn’t wait to leave. Her secret may unravel before she and Ben get a second chance at love because her brother’s murderer has his sights set on Leigh—and Acting Sheriff Ben Logan may be her only hope to stay alive.

Bradley is a Southern writer who juxtaposes small town charm with big time suspense. A Promise to Protect is an intriguing novel that will keep you turning pages. I’ll definitely buy more books from Patricia Bradley!

A thrilling inspirational romantic suspense read! by S.B. McCormack on 11/7/2014

As Patricia Bradley’s compelling A Promise to Protect opens, small-town Mississippi Sheriff Ben Logan has just discoveredpromise his ex-girlfriend’s brother, Tony Jackson, dying of multiple gunshot wounds on the floor of a Memphis hotel room. Tony quickly shares a series of cryptic clues to the identify of his attacker, secures Ben’s promise to protect his sister’s life and passes on.

It isn’t long before the reader learns that Ben has a real problem on his hands: He and Leigh, the deceased’s sister, haven’t been on speaking terms since Leigh disappeared from his life during a burgeoning summer romance ten years before. She never explained why she left, and he–in the throes of heartbreak–never asked. How on Earth will he convince her to accept his help and protection from an unknown foe today?

Leigh Somerall, now a widowed medical doctor and the mother of a young son, fled fictional Logan Point, Mississippi for reasons that still haunt her ten years later. She’s only been back in town for four weeks when she learns of her brother’s untimely demise. Shaken with grief and tormented by past mistakes, Leigh is loathe to accept Ben’s protection or advice in the wake of her brother’s death–especially when the irksome sheriff plies her for information about an attack that left his father disabled and a missing flash drive she knows nothing about. She wants out of Logan Point and away from Ben at all costs, but a year-long commitment to a local hospital makes that an impossibility.

When a series of mysterious attacks drive Ben and Leigh in ever closer proximity to one another–while their own doubts, anxieties and secrets threaten to drive them further apart–will they find the faith and courage to regain what was lost? To forgive what transpired? To defeat the enemy that threatens them both?

In A Promise to Protect, the second installment of Patricia Bradley’s intriguing Logan Point series, the author ushers the reader into a splintered, complex southern community where the relentless heat and the constant threat of encroaching storms underscore the instability of the society in which the main characters reside. For every character embracing the value, sanctity and importance of family and the serenity born of a life of faith, there’s another long on finger-pointing and recrimination and short on forgiveness and absolution. And, on a purely psychological level, the hero and heroine of the story are harder on themselves than anyone.

In Ben and Leigh, Ms. Bradley has drawn a pair of sympathetic, believably conflicted characters. Both are anxious to do the right thing–for themselves and for those around them. But they’ve also endured intermittent trials, pain and heartache in the ten years since they last encountered one another. Strong but vulnerable Ben could use a good, swift kick in the pants from someone who recognizes and cherishes his innate heroism and sensitivity. Stubborn but compassionate Leigh needs a break from–well–everything. She’s a classic “A” type–determined to be the perfect mother, the perfect doctor, the perfect example. The effect created by all of that palpable angst and percolating emotion is galvanizing: Almost from the book’s inception, the reader yearns to see these two together. Happy. Fulfilled. Married.

But, well, wasn’t it Shakespeare who wrote, “The course of true love never did run smooth”?

Plot happens. And Patricia Bradley crafts a formidable tale of danger, mystery and intrigue for this unsuspecting couple-in-waiting. Prepare yourself for a tense, bumpy, breakneck gallop through the final quarter of this sensational inspirational romantic suspense novel.

I give this thrilling book 4 out of 5 stars!

Intense and Action Packed by Seasons of Grace on 10/30/2014

My first book by Patricia was Shadows of the Past, the first book in this series, which by the way is not a necessary read to comprehend this book, but definitely a recommended one for its own sake. I fell in love with her writing immediately. She can sure capture your attention from the very beginning.
"Tony Jackson shouldn't be dying in a ritzy hotel room in downtown Memphis on a hot July night. He shouldn't be dying at all."
If that doesn't get you involved and read to read on... I don't know what will!

Patricia's writing is full of suspense. You will be hanging on every minute wondering what will happen next. What I also love about her is the way she incorporates her faith into the plot and characters. After grabbing you, Patricia takes you on a roller coaster ride of ups and downs and tight packed action, with a few twists on the way. Insert some strained romance and you're set.

In this novel, main character Leigh Somerall is a single mom who works hard, loves her kid, and is obviously in need of protection. Main character two -Leigh's former flame, Ben, now sheriff and the last person she wants around, has given a dying man - her brother - his promise to protect her. And he intends to fulfill that promise even against her wishes. The story is full of unexpected surprises. An emotional ride in which you will be rooting for Ben to grasp God's forgiveness, for Leigh to give up her secrets, and of course a happily ever after ending to happen. Not wanting to give away spoilers, I would just highly recommend you read this book!

I received this book from Revell's blogger program in exchange for my review.

Another great suspense story from Patricia Bradley! by J. Augustine on 10/30/2014

I am always in the mood for a good suspense story and I have really been enjoying Patricia Bradley's Logan Point series. I liked the first book, Shadows Of The Past, when I read it so I looked forward to reading book two, A Promise To Protect. Absolutely no disappointments at all! It was a great story! Mystery, suspense, danger, secrets, galore. And of course, one must not forget the romance in this story. It's a great story of losing something precious and maybe getting a second chance at it.

This book has more twists and turns! I really thought I had most of the bad guys figured out, and I did have a couple, but Patricia Bradley threw me a curveball or two. I've read a lot of mystery and suspense books over the years and it's and I love stories that leave me surprised and guessing.

A Promise To Protect left some semi loose ends that, to my way of thinking, are perfect lead-ins. So I'm on pins and needles waiting for news of a third book in the Logan Point series.

Fans of suspense are in for a real treat with Patricia Bradley's A Promise To Protect!

Review from Rambles of a SAHM by Fitzysmom on 10/29/2014

Patricia Bradley is quickly becoming one of my favorite romantic suspense writers. In A Promise To Protect she takes us back to the little Southern town of Logan Point. Ben Logan has been appointed acting sheriff while his father, the elected sheriff recovers from a shooting. Logan Point is usually a sleepy little town but an uptick of crimes seems to have coincided with the return of Dr. Leigh Somerall.

Leigh grew up in Logan Point but was from a not so upstanding family and earned a bad reputation through some of her antics. She was interested in Ben but he didn't take notice of her until college. Their romance seemed to be a match made in heaven until one fateful encounter changed everything. She's now a respected physician and decided to return to Logan Point to be close to her only brother Tony. Leigh has a very big secret to hide but the longer she's in town the trickier it is becoming.

From the opening scenes of the book there is a murder and it looks like Leigh may be the next target. But as with every good suspense book, everything isn't as it appears. Could Ben really be the target? If so, who's behind the attacks and why?

This fast-paced novel will keep you guessing up until the very end. Layer by layer the story begins to emerge of secrets, scandals and outright lies. I think you will enjoy uncovering the mysteries surrounding Ben, Leigh and the other residents of Logan Point.

A Promise To Protect is book two in the Logan Point series. Book one is Shadows of the Past. Each book can easily be read as a stand-alone title, but of course I think you'd enjoy reading them both.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

I can easily recommend by Vera on 10/25/2014

Patricia Bradley writes an easy to read, clean romantic suspense and A Promise to Protect fits this category. While I found the story a bit slow in places and the seemingly unreal plethora of events and bad things happening to the folks in Logan Point, it was an enjoyable, though not captivating, read.

I can recommend it easily for those who enjoy contemporary romantic suspense. I enjoy this genre and this book was pleasant. There was not too much romance and it was a clean read - which is a high priority in my reading material.

What I really liked: 1) I really liked T.J. who is Leigh's young son and he exuds little boy hype, energy, fun, and caring. 2) I really liked the interaction between T.J. and Ben's father who is incapable of speech. T.J. has a real connection with him (more than meets the eye, too). 3) I really like the protection that Ben wants to provide for Leigh. To me this is a paramount character in strong men and men of virtue.

A Promise to Protect by Patricia Bradley (Book 2 in the Logan Point Series) – A BookReview
I posted a review on my blog for book one in the Logan Point series on February 1, 2014. It began, “This book has more twists and turns in the first chapter than many books do between their covers.” A Promise to Protect is no different. Half-way into the book there had been a murder, attempted murders, two arsons, and two snake bites, among other nefarious events. While the romantic storyline might be a bit predictable, the mystery and suspense elements are not. Bradley plays it close to the vest until very near the book’s end, revealing some character’s involvement only to make you question others’. I had been greatly anticipating this second book, and was not disappointed. While this is the second book of the series, it would work fine as a stand-alone read, and the reader would be able to read the books out of sequence without too much of a problem.
Recently an author asked a group of avid readers what element of a book was most likely to determine their opinion of the book. For me it is dialogue, dialogue, dialogue. When selecting a book I open it up to three or four different spots and sample the dialogue. If it sounds stilted or cheesy, I put the book back on the shelf and continue my search. Bradley’s books contain a great deal of well written dialogue that keeps the story moving. She is a master of show don’t tell, avoiding lengthy descriptions, allowing the dialogue to lead her readers in inferring and creating mental images.
A Promise to Protect deals with the theme of forgiveness. While forgiveness of others is central to the plot, it is the main characters’ struggles with forgiving themselves that is really addressed within the storyline. Bradley also deals with the importance of accepting forgiveness, something often ignored as many authors and speakers deal with giving forgiveness. I have taught many a comprehension strategy lesson on making text-to-self connections. I doubt that there are many readers who would fail to connect to the theme of this book as there are multiple opportunities among a variety of characters to give and receive forgiveness, as well as opportunities to withhold the very same.
Whether this is your second visit to Logan’s Point or only your first, I predict that you will be losing a lot of sleep until your visit comes to an end. You will find yourself rooting for Sheriff Ben Logan as Dr. Leigh Somerall reenters his life ten years after their college romance abruptly ended. Your heart will go out to her son, TJ, as he deals with the many challenges life hands him, and your heart will race as revenge is sought for real and imagined wrongs, and as the desire for revenge or retribution is relinquished by some. Welcome to Logan’s Point.
I thank Revell Publishers and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for providing A Promise to Protect for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own

Dying Request by Maureen on 10/22/2014

A dying request, protect my sister, an old friend, how could he refuse? Of course, being the sheriff and having a past with the sister also goes into the consideration. Little did Ben know how much protection Leigh was going to need, and how involved he was about to become.
We find a woman who has made something of herself, and has a very big secret. She has challenged herself to be the very best at what she does, and she is now a Doctor. She is a smart woman, with very little self-esteem.
Ben also seems to have a lot to prove, to both himself and his parents, mainly his father. He is following in his Dad’s footsteps and is acting sheriff right now, and hoping to run for election. Someone seems to be out to stop that from happening, does this persons agenda about Ben or is it about Leigh? Will someone end up dying before we get the answers as to who is responsible, for murder?
Their are several twists in this story and sometimes it seems like we are running in two directions at the same time, are they connected, or is everything separate? Then there is TJ, a ten year old that Leigh is the Mother of, and Sarah a charming older woman, who has been like a mother and grandmother to them comes to help them.
We also meet Ben’s family and TJ is able to see what having an extended family is like, and you see his yearning for it. Will Leigh finally find the success she seems to crave, or will the evil that is out there be able to grab her? God is there pulling for her and TJ, and you will love how he opens up the doors and closes others.
I loved this book, and it became a compelling page-turner as I sought the answers to all the questions I had, you won’t be able to put this one down.

I received this book through Revell Book Publishers, and was not required to give a positive review.

Can't put it down by Karen on 10/6/2014

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Oh. My. Word. This book is amazing.

This story revolves around the two main characters, Leigh and Ben. The two were an item one summer about ten years ago, but Leigh left town and Ben moved on with his life (sorta). Leigh has returned to Logan Point with her son for, what she hopes, is a temporary job.

Almost as soon as Leigh returns to town, bad things begin to happen. First her brother is murdered, and then a long list of crimes begin to stack up around town. Ben just happens to be the sheriff and has promised Leigh's brother that he will protect her.

This book has so many twists and turns, you just can't make yourself put it down. Just when you think you have figured out who is committing all the crimes, something else comes up and changes everything.

The same is true with Ben and Leigh's relationship. There is a deep history there that begins to reveal itself as this story unfolds. There is hurt and confusion, but also an attraction that the reader can't help but notice.

It's hard to talk about this book without including spoilers, but the story will hook you in the first chapter and keep you wanting more until the very last sentence.
