- UNBELIEVABLE EMOTIONS - JULIE LESSMAN AT HER BEST!!!! by Bonnie Roof on 2/3/2014
Katie O'Connor is a stubborn, spit-fire whose beau, Jack Worthington, is "wrapped around her finger", and meets all the criteria on her list: wealthy, handsome, and well-connected. Her plans to marry Jack, enter law school, and fight for women's rights, are interrupted when she is unexpectedly forced to spend the summer away from Jack, and work with childhood friend Luke (aka "Cluny") McGee, with whom she had a love/hate relationship. Even though the scrawny, dirty, street-wise, kid has grown into a tall, handsome, intelligent, lawyer - the sparks fly between them from the first chapter. In a family filled with faith - Katie questions hers, and argues with her father for control of her life, and the expressions of his love she feels she is lacking.
"A Hope Undaunted" - the first book in the Winds of Change trilogy - opens in 1929 Boston, and is the continuation of the O'Connor family saga, which started with the Daughters of Boston trilogy. Warm interactions between family members introduced in previous books, continue in "A Hope Undaunted", as well as that of numerous new characters - among them, scene stealer Gabe, a feisty, eight (8) year old, orphan, and Parker Riley - Katie's kind, easy-going boss.
There are numerous "twists-and-turns" in "A Hope Undaunted" - as in all of Julie Lessman's books - both heart-breaking, and heart-warming. I experienced many emotions while reading this beautiful, powerful, classic Julie Lessman, story that is filled with humor, drama, tears, anger, romance, excitement, angst, passion, characters so realistic I feel I know them personally, and an inspirational family of faith, whose love and passion is centered around God, and which drew me closer to Him through their experiences.
Julie Lessman is a master at her craft - her books inspire and touch me deeply. They're hard to put down, bring me joy with their happy ending, always leave me wanting more, and leave warm memories that last long after reading them!!
- A brilliant book! by gatorade635 on 1/20/2014
From the moment Luke and Katie met in A Passion Denied you knew their relationship was going to be a fun one! They butted heads from day one but there was always an underlying of more-and oh boy what a “more” it was!
I absolutely love Luke! He was a scrappy little boy living on the streets who worked hard, never gave up, and became a man who was a champion of those who'd grown up like him. It would be impossible not to love Luke. His determination to do the right thing, his love of kids, his fierce love for those close to him, and his relationship with God, all serve to make him one amazing hero. Of course he does have his faults but he tries so hard to be the man he is supposed to be, and he truly is a man to admire!
As for Katie, she's always been a determined one who doesn't like being told what to do and it was amazing to watch as she let God into her life and really grew up! She goes from being a spoiled little girl to a woman who is willing to do things God's way.
The two of them together cracked me up so much as they constantly baited each other and jokingly bickered. And while I laughed out loud too many times to count this book also made me cry several times! I won't spoil anything but suffice it to say there was a lot of heartbreak in these pages!
And I know I keep saying this but the secondary cast of characters was awesome! Parker with his gentle strength and his friendship, Betty with her caring and friendly heart, Bobbie Sue with her no nonsense ways, and Gabe with her rebellious heart just looking for love! And then of course there are the characters that have been around for awhile, the rest of the O'Conners, the McGuires, Dennehys, Bradys, and Emma.
So even though this book put me through an emotional roller-coaster I loved every minute of it and can't think of this book without a smile on my face!
- Kept Me On the Edge of My seat! by AngiOakley on 4/23/2013
Julie Lessman brings us her second series that continues on with the lives of the O'Conner siblings. The Winds of Change series opens as the roaring 20's are coming to a close. Fiesty Katie O'Conner will settle for nothing less than perfection in her life. The perfect husband and the perfect law career. But one thing stands in her way of achieving her goals...Luke McGee.
Once known as the orphan, Cluny McGee, Luke McGee is now working for an agency that places children into caring homes. Little does he know that his life is about to be turned upside down by the woman who once called him 'a street rat' when they were children. But this time Luke is determined to make Katie see him as more than just an orphan or a street rat...leaving no room for doubt that he is a man of integrity. But will an orphan's promise threaten to tear them apart?
In this story, Julie shows that situations and people aren't always what they seem, and that true love and acceptance comes from God.

- Exciting!!!!!!! by JacyRose on 1/17/2012
This novel tells the story of Katie O'Connor who has her life planned out. Then she has to spend the summer working for Cluny McGee the "pest from her past" who has turned into handsome Luke. This is another fast paced novel that allows you to get into the characters' lives.
- Another Must-Read! by EMarie on 12/16/2011
Julie Lessman has written another must-read! A Hope Undaunted was a beautiful story. Luke and Katie hated each other as children, fall in love as adults, and get torn apart by circumstances out of their control. Your heart breaks with Katie several times during this book, and you'll probably even cry with her. I did. I loved this book, so much. It is definitely at the top of my list of favorites alongside A Passion Denied. You won't want to skip Katie and Luke's story, trust me. Julie Lessman is a brilliant writer and you'll never be disappointed with one of her books.
- Wonderful! by CelticGirl on 12/6/2011
Katie O'Connor is a spunky young woman with high standards for herself and the man she will marry. But when she breaks her father's curfew with Jack one too many times, she finds herself punished for the summer. Her punishment? Spend the summer volunteering at the Boston Children's Aid Society, which she finds makes her childhood nemesis, Luke McGee, her boss.
I LOVED reading A Hope Undaunted! Katie, being the baby of the O'Connor family, was always a minor character and seeing her all grown up now was unbelievable.
A Hope Undaunted was a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. I would strongly suggest that you read the Daughters of Boston Series before you read this book - as this story is a continuation of a family saga. Julie Lessman's books are my all-time favorites, ones I can read again and again!
- Don't miss this one! by Smokee54 on 12/3/2011
It's been a long time since I have read such a good book! The writing is smooth, beautiful and easy to read. All the characters have their own distinct personalities and encounter life as we all do. It's a feel good book about a loving family in Boston during the 1920's. And, the romance is oh so good!!!!
