5 Daily Prayers for Husbands to Make an Impact

Every weekday morning around seven my phone buzzes multiple times. It’s a group text with three of my closest friends. For 15 years we’ve sent prayers for our husbands via text each morning.

We pray for:

  • Jobs
  • Relationships with children
  • Parenting
  • Heart transformations
  • Strongholds
  • Peace
  • Trust
  • Faith

I honestly don’t remember whose idea it was, but this simple rhythm has been a gift I didn’t know I needed. The accountability and encouragement during the early years of our marriage helped develop a pattern of consistent and persistent prayer over my husband.

Praying for our husbands may not always feel valuable or significant. It can become monotonous and we can be unsure of what to say. But, prayer is one of the greatest ways we get to love and serve our husbands.

Stormie Omartian, says in her book, The Power of a Praying Wife, that praying for our husbands’ is “laying down all claim to power in and of yourself, and relying on God’s power to transform you, your husband, your circumstances, and your marriage.”

Prayer isn’t a means for God to change our husbands into who we want them to be, but an invitation from God to partner with Him and the work He is doing in our husbands. No one else can pray for your husband the way you can.

One of my favorite times to pray for my husband is while I fold laundry. As I fold, I will pray over him from head to toe – for his mind, heart, and body. Often I will pray the armor of God over him, from Ephesians 6:10-20.

Scripture gives us prompts we can pray when we feel stuck and aren’t sure what or how to pray.

5 Prayers Worth Praying for Your Husband

1.    Relationship with God

Father, I thank You that You chose my husband and created him to bear fruit for your glory. (John 15:16 ESV) I pray he would know how high, how wide, and how deep Your love is. (Ephesians 3:18 ESV) Open the eyes of his heart to know the hope to which You have called him in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 1:17-18 ESV) May You, God, be the greatest desire of his heart. I pray he will seek You diligently. (Matthew 6:33 ESV) Amen.

2.    Faithful Steward

Father, You created my husband to bear Your image to those around him. Show him how to faithfully steward the gifts, talents, time, and resources entrusted to him. (Titus 1:7 ESV) Help him see opportunities to serve and encourage others with his gifts. I pray he would have a generous heart that is quick to give abundantly to those in need. (Luke 12:42, 48 ESV) Amen.

3.    Kind and Gracious Words

Father, I pray my husband’s words would be grace-filled and bless every person he speaks to. (Colossians 4:6; Proverbs 16:24 ESV) Use his words to encourage and build others up. Help him control his tongue and only say what is true, noble, and praiseworthy. (Proverbs 18:21 ESV) Amen.

4.    Strong Spiritual Leader

Jesus, give my husband wisdom and guidance as the spiritual leader of our home. (Ephesians 5:23 ESV) I pray he would set the example of faithful prayer and daily reading of Your Word. (Titus 2:7 ESV) I pray he would also be a strong spiritual leader in his workplace. I pray he would reflect your love in the way he loves and leads others. (John 12:46 ESV) Amen.

5.    Godly Friendships

Father, I thank You for creating us to live in community. Surround my husband with godly men who will sharpen him, speak the truth in love, are quick to offer encouragement and wisdom, and he can relax with and have fun. (Proverbs 27:17; Jeremiah 33:11 ESV) Amen
